ok had a look seem some on ebay one from a guy making them in real italian leather
erm ... how do you get the gearknob off ? do you twist it or just yank the life out of it till it comes off ... and then unclip the old one and clip the new one back on and hey presto funky new leather thingy
... no even my clumsy hands could muck this one up.

This might sound a bit daft but why not settle for the 1.8 non turbo gti?? there 125bhp as standard and plenty of parts wereas the 2.0 is only 115 bhp (correct me if im wrong please) so maybe you should go for the 1.8 pretty sure costs and insurance will be around same as yours.

What you need to do is release the old leather gaiter from the bottom and the pull it up over the knob, this will reveal a metal clamp that needs to be released. Once you have done this the know will slide off with ease.
Normally the knob and gaiter are all one item, although with a bit of paitence you can change the leather, just dont split the plastic retainer

thanks for the help here.
Managed to do it this afternoon after getting my car back from the garage running fine. New cambelt cars purrrrrrin' like it was when I got it.
And treated it to a new gaiter.
