Title: Optimax for my 8V?
Post by: Pimpster on 19 November 2003, 11:37
I've just moved near to a Shell garage and am thinking seriously of using Shell Optimax.

I've been told there is a knock sensor that automatically calibrates the engine to be able to use 98 RON but:

1. Is it ok to do? ???

2. Has anyone used it on an 8V and has it made any difference? ???

3. Is it worth it? ???

1. it should be ok,

2. i tried it in my old 8v polo.. it was definitely a bit more nippy

3. its best to try for yourself. put some in when you're as empty as poss.. i hear its good to run a few loads through to ensure you're fully maxed up.. not sure how true that is.

Optimax will be fine, the engine should run a bit better. The knock sensor is on the engine so you can use normal unleaded without pinking under load.

VW state in the owners manual that using 98RON gives me more torque on my vr6, don't know if it will do anything for the 8v. I doubt it  :-*

I didnt see anything, but the big 95 RON ONLY sticker on the fuel cap made me think...

Post by: golfvr6 on 19 November 2003, 16:37
Probably means don't use less than 95RON.

I would have agreed, but the ONLY part of 95 RON Only got me a bit perplexed.

I'll give it a go. If its doesnt do anything for mine i'll go back to 95.

What do you run yours on VR6?

I normally just put unleaded in, but if i'm in a garage that does optimax, i will use that. High octane fuel won't damage the engine, only fuel which doesn't have a high enough octane rating.

Optimax is ok in the 8 valve, as you stated the sticker only means the minimum of 95ron to be used.
Optimax definately works in an 8 valve, works in mine, it does exactly what it says in the ads, makes your engine more responsive, gives it more ooomph!

Aside from the performance gains you will notice your car stops burning oil (bizzar) and you get more miles for your money. Takin this into account it works out no more expensive than the 95ron standard stuff and you get a better conditioned engine and slightly more performance.

Tis good stuff - it is basically what all fuels should be like but unfortunately coz most people don't care for their cars the demand is not there for the petrol companies to refine their fuels! Shame!

Been running it in my 8 valve for 8 months 6,000 miles and i have not had to top up the oil once! On the dipstick the level has not moved 1mm, tis incredable! At this rate its gonna go from service to service with out me touching it! Anyone else noticed this?

Right - i'm convinced. Should be putting some in next week.

I used to put it in my 306 xsi 16v and made it far better, but i was a bit unsure about the golf.

I'll update once i've put in 3 tanks.

I've used Optimax since I bought my 8v a couple of months ago. I love it. It is a bit more responsive and it has increased the economy to a point where it works out the same per mile as normal unleaded. This plus the benefits of reduced engine wear means its a good choice.

Been running optimax for the last 4 fills, noticed slight increase in responsiveness, not really with speed.  2nd gear bites harder.  Give it a go.

Optimax is good for my 8v but i live about 15mile from my nearest Shell so I use BP Premium 97RON instead as its 1mile from my house :D

the sticker on the inside of the petrol cap of a mk3 gti 8v say 91 ron minimum but it is recommended to run on 95 ron.....thus sticking optimax is gonna make a insignificant difference and the knock sensor is only gonna pick up 95 ron as a max reading coz it has not be made to recognise 98.

Mk2 8v takes 98 ron as its recommended to run on this coz the sticker says it.

So my advice for all you 8v mk3 owners is sell your car and buy a mk2 8v coz a mk3 8v ain't no sports car.......too slow, too over weight and handles like a caravan plus it looks like a sack of sh!t. Futhermore, why pay GTI premiums for something that aint even close to being a gti? Its like buying a Fiat Uno 950cc and sticking a sign saying "badass turbo" and then paying gti premiums for a sack of sh!t.....plus its boring to look at and the interior is bland....

Think i will go back to mk2 forum now!!!

LOL ;D

The knock sensor doesn't pick up what fuel you use, it picks up when the engine knocks. This will only happen with low octane fuel. Sell you mk2 and get a vr6  :-*
