Title: Factory fitted "sports suspension"
Post by: M6 VWW on 18 November 2003, 23:21
How much difference does the VW factory fitted sports suspension make to a PD 130?

from what ive read on another post somewhere it only uses springs and lowers the car 26mm, save your money and get some lower springs 30-40mm and get em fitted and it will handle more like a gti!

Hi I was the one who mentioned about the sports suspension. I think it was defiantly value for money as I only had the suspension part of the sports pack. I don?t like the Montreal II wheels so I asked if I could just have the suspension part. It cost me 120 pounds instead of 600 pounds with the wheels. This price includes my 4% discount because I had rear parking sensor, metallic paint and steering wheel where you can adjust the stereo volume and channel with. (If I had the choice again I would not bother with this as you only get 4 buttons for 300 pounds!!!)

Hope that helps & if you are paying cash be as forward as you can with the sales guy as I got a great discount and even a free tank of diesel out of him.

Just got my new car but I couldn't get the factory sports suspnsion as they've now stopped making the MK4.

My new motor, GT TDI 130 w/15" alloys handles a lot differently to my GTI 1.8 Turbo w/17" alloys on it.

I've bought a set of GTI Turbo springs second hand, does anyone know if these will fit to my TDI???

The PD150 runs the same suspension as the GTi turbo, so I guess that you now have std PD150 suspension.

All will be revealed on Friday. It they go on no bother, they'll prove to be a good buy for ?25 for the full set.

I gave my new car some stick on wet roads on the way back from work tonight and it handled pretty well, albeit with a fair amount of body roll...

Just been down to the local VW specialists and they say that the 1.8T springs won't be right for my PD130 as the diesel engine weighs alot more than the petrol one, bugger.

Does anyone with a petrol MK 4 fancy a set of almost new 1.8T lower and stiffer springs for only ?25 inc postage?

What to the coloured circles on the speings relate to by the way?

If you are going to fit the factory sports springs to the PD 130, make sure you also get the uprated shocks from the gti, or better still the Koni Sport adjustable variety. Otherwise on braking, your car will pitch like a Channel Ferry in a force 8 gale and the handling will be naff.

Cheers for the advice, I don't know what to do now. It's a company car so I only want to use proper VW bits.

The factory fitted sports suspension is only ?150 so surely it can't be uprated shocks AND springs???

I think you will find it is just for the springs. I read in VW Driver  that a guy fitted the sports suspension upgrade (just the springs) to his Passat, which induced rolling and nausea for his passengers. The Gti shocks are of a different design to the 130 shocks (much firmer with less rebound). If you specify the sports suspension when ordering a non Gti new, you get the Gti shocks as well. If you buy the sports suspension as an aftermarket upgrade you just get the springs.

if your just plumping for springs id get some that are slightly lower than the vw ones, your car will handle and look far better and these springs are available at a cheaper cost than vw!!! :D

That's why I got a mk2. Leaves me more money to chuck at it. I put some avo coilovers on mine about 2 weeks after I got it. I keep catching the front bumper on the drive now though, and I can't go in half the car parks in my town because of the slopes in them... b@stard things, just ain't car friendly. ::)
