When they brought the mk5 out they said it was as good as a mk1 - i've just got back from a week in spain where i hired one, i've gotta admit they're not far off the mark, if it looked nice and made more interesting sounds i might actually want one
so whats the general opinion - have they finally got it right?

I love the Mk5, watched the top gear review on it and they said it was a brilliant car! I'd definately have one!
-
We have mark 5 golfs as pool cars at work so drive them occasionally, have driven the 105 1.9TDI and the 1.6 FSI, it is a better drive i think than the Mark 4, where we have a few of them as pool cars aswell!
I like them alot! I need to be taken out in a mark 5 GTI at least or to drive one would be even better to see what its like

the Gti looks and go's really well, but i'm still a fan of the old gti..
nowt like the old ones...

don't get me wrong, i wouldn't part with my mk1 for all the mk5's in the world - i'm well impressed by the mk5 though, with the traction control off it slid round the mountain roads so well i kept forgetting i wasn't actually in my mk1
-
I love the mk1 (obviously   ) and I love the mk5, I've never driven one so it's purely a distance love but it gets my thumbs up.  :smug:
-
Im going to say mk1... purely on the sexy retro look.
and i'd never get insurance on a mk5

you would but probably not for another 50 years!!
I'd probably go for the MKV and have a MK1 as a weekend, trackday toy
-
I love the 5!! Personally, I think the 4 isn't that nice to look at, I prefer the look of the 3. Although, if I had the money I would possibly go for the Leon Cupra R/Audi A3 1.8T instead.

If the mk1 was brand new out and sittin next to a mk5 i know which id have, the mk1 every time.

Yeah spot on. I've never driven one so my opinion is purely on looks but I love the boxy shape of the mk1, even the mk4 has that boxy shape but the mk5's shape is starting to look very 'rounded' to me? More like the pug 206!

if i had a choice of my mk1 or a new mk5 i would take the mk5! i think you can do alot more to them for a lot less cash, ie engine tuning, also the road noise, safety and the interior are far better! dont get me wrong i love my mk1 and unless the mk5 was for free i wouldnt change (i couldn't afford too!! lol)
the mk5 looks mint even in standard form, so with some phat rims and a good suspension kit your really on to a winner! give it twenty years and i may buy one!

The only thing I don't like about them is the rear... :undecided:

As people have mentioned the mk5 would win hands down for pure safety and road noise etc. The mk1 would win hands down for handling, and just looking amazing. (I have to say that i would go for a mk1)
Although tuning wise unless something was transplanted into the mk1 there is no way you are going to get the same feeling of raw power. Mine (mk2) is on the heels (and sometimes in front) of the mk5 gti now, and i personally think that my engine is at its limit without forced induction, so there is no way that i am going to be able to keep with a mk5 if it gets tinkered with.
If i had to make a choice of which car to go for, despite all the safety and comfy ride i am a rallye slag at heart so would have to go for the mk1 and make something of it. As much as the mk5 appeals to the safety concious in me i couldn't justify the price and lack of engine noise on it.
final decision mk1 purely for that fact that it is a legend in the GTi fraternity.

Its got to be the look of the MK1 but the engine n technolgy of the MK V.
Maybe im just gredy lol
