Just got my baby back from the garage and my thoughts about breaks were totally wrong, which i expected to be fair.
THE VERDICT: It needs lower arms with bushes both sides and all engine mounts and possibly trailing arm bushes both sides.
Now how much should i be looking at for these. The place i went to with it this afternoon who are vw specialists said the rear trailing arms wernt essential. What do you guys think? I really need your help here, id love to know how bad things are and what cost i should be lookin at.
Thanks in advance, a very sad golfpro

sorry to hear about the repairs needed.... What has been the issue mate for it to be needing all thoses parts replacing? Shame your not in the UK anymore I would of helped to replace all those parts - for alot less than any garage would offer...

Thats a lot to be f**ked in one go ??
How many miles have you done?

138k the last few have been on really bumpy guernsey roads. think its been buildin up for quite some time. As iv advertised im not mechanical atall and if iv heard a knock or a bang iv thought it was nothing.
If i was still in the uk id be there mate. Thanks for that anyway.
Any thoughts on price from any1?

I would guess at about 100 quid parts and 100 quid labour(about 2 hours), to replace all the bushes, arms and balljoints.
Thats only really a guess, depends what labour rates are where you live.
Probably would be best to buy the lot yourself, you can buy wishbones new with bushes already fitted.

well iv got my quote at £321.80 and the earliest it can be done is march the 8th. Iv got no choice really coz nowhere else can do it sooner for less and its goin to a vw specialists where every1s vw nutts. like home from home really.
It does give me plenty of time to look for a replacement car tho as im debatin gettin it scrapped. I can just see it leadin to more and more problems. Quite fancy a mk3 cab still so i can keep my parts and scrap whats left. What do u all think, its done 138k and for a 1.4 i know thats lots. The engine seems to run well enough and the body seems sound on the outside. But its 13 years old with no service history. Its goin to need front breaks soon plus a full service.
Feelin really down at the minute, help and advice much appreciated. Ta

With regards the engine mounts, make sure they fit the uprated VR6 ones, they are much firmer and last longer
Might as well keep the car, once you've got it fixed it's a cse of better the devil you know. That said my Mk3 has started this god-forsaken cutting out malarky and has cost me £600 this week  I'm on the look out for a booted VR6  this is only because the finance runs out later this year which means I've had the car long enough and need a change

sell it and buy yourself a nice camper , and guess what i`ve got one for sale

what u got, do u hav any pics, how much do u want for it. seriously might consider it if its what im after

Phil, first of all I'll bet you any money that the quote they gave you was lower than you thought it would be, so I would get it done and see how it goes, as far as I can remember it's the first time you've had to spend some cash on it to repair it. If mk1 owners gave up when they had a big bill there'd be no-one driving mk1s ! :smug:
You say it's going to need a full service and brakes soon ! Err yeah, so do most cars, just because it's a 1.4 doesn't mean you dont have to look after it. You've done loads to your car and it looks good, I even told you that at E38 and you know my feelings on mk3s ! So, sell it because you want to move on and get a different car, dont sell it because you think it might start to cost you loads (unless the garage say it's fooked). The garage if they are good will also do a check around it to see if there is anything else that needs replacing either now or soon.
Oh yeah, please dont get a mk3 cab, I know this is my opinion, but they are sh1te.

Tis some good advice gibby. You are right with the quote i did think anything up to 500quid was possible. Iv had some time to think about it and selling it would be stupid. I love the car and whatever i got next id only want to do the same things to it. Being a 1.4 suits me with payin less insurance and the speed limits over here dont lend them selves to powerful cars.
Im takin it in on thursday for them to have a good look over it and make sure everything thats needed will be there ready for when its booked in on march the 8th! I gues thats a good sign that theyre that busy. My best friend is a very good friend with the manager so il be takin him along with me to see if anything can be saved.
I have very rarely had to spend anything on it. Its not stopped me spendin on it but its not been essentials. So for now at least, the mighty mk3 will still be in my capable hands.
Thanks for the comment about likin it anyway gib, it meany a lot from u in particular, and I hadnt forgot you said it
