Post by: n0357851 on 15 February 2006, 11:34

Oh, if I had a quid for every time i'd heard this one.............

IMHO, the TDI.

Less overall BHP but the peak power comes in earlier than the FSi and clearly is much tourquier.  Cabin noise is slightly higher in the oil burner but only really noticable on tickover.  30-40% better fuel consumption and  only a few hundred pounds more to buy. Yes the fuel is more expensive by a couple of pennies but obviously you'll be filling it up less often.

Residual values are higher on diesel models but only really by the amount they cost you more to start with.

The FSI is a much more revvy engine than the diesel but some people like that.

If it helps, as a guide, we sell 7 GT TDIs for every GT FSI. Yes, 7 to 1.

Wait a bit and buy the TURBO + SUPERCHARGED version of the GT

Lots of bhp and nearly 40 MPG

I know I 'll be changing our GT TDI for one!

Is that GT version really coming out?  Wish VW had made the GTI like that - it would have been running at 260+ bhp

You can easily get 275 bhp from a GTi for around £1700 fitted

Where from Doc, and what about warranty issues (can the 'mod' be easily disconnected/disguised?)

Welll actually REVO do it for £500 - 255bhp - why pay an extra £1200 for 15bhp extra, especially when it involves taking of the standard exhaust...  Plus with REVO its all done by software and easily reversible and cannot be detected.  In fact , with the SPS switch, you can even turn the tuning on and off when you want.  However... a GTI running at 275bhp as standard with a Supercharger AND Turbo would be a tuners paradise. Mind you, the GTI would then really need to be 4x4 and that would make the R32 redundant and it wouldn't really be a GTI with 4x4 drive...

paulm007 - Just a bit of info from the main dealers standpoint - A non-educated dealer will tell you tales of how these upgrades destroy your warranty and will make you car difficult to re-sell blah blah.  I know of at least four of my customers who have had their cars Revo'd and still come into us for servicing. As long as you turn the re-map off when you come in (i think you can get a plug-in thingy that turns the new software on and off) we will never know. I know a customer who has a GTI 1.8T 150ps Revo'd to 212ps that still comes in for routine servicing and no-ones any the wiser. I don't know what can be done woth the Mark V but as long as you revert to normal when bringing in for service, we'll not know!

Hope this helps!

Thanks VMD, looked on their website

For a standard GTI, power increases from 200 - 260bhp!!!!!!.  All for a mere £500 notes plus VAT.

Cheaper than an R32
