im stuck in two minds with my 16v, whether to keep it or sell it
i've had it for just over a 18mths now, and no joke every part of the running gear has been replaced due to failure at some point, the last being the power steering which its still of the road because of
the only other thing it needs is a respray as its a bit tatty in places with dints and rust bubbles, which i was planning on getting sorted in the new year
i do love it to pieces, but at the mo im driving an mazda mx6 on loan, which is effortless to drive but just hasnt got the fun factor of the golf
but im getting sick & tired of pumpin money into the car!!
its one of the last 16v's & has leather interior etc and has just over 80k on it
so the big question:-
will it ever become a sought after car? or am i just wasting money on it for the sake of it?
-
The mk2 16v is already a classic ;D
-
me and my fat ass will second that!!

hehe.. I think so too..
i think in time the mk3 16v and vr6 may too..
-
vr6 yes mk3 16v no
-
controversial.. you have any basis in fact for that argument?
here's my take on it..
while the 8v may be a dog (which is why I left it out, and why some people dont call it a 'real gti') the 16v has similar performance to the MK2 16v, and has more in common with the VR6 than the 8v, for example only the 16v and VR6 have traction control.
-
yes!!!!! :)
-
I think what i comes down to is how different the Mk3 Gti 16v is.
Is it a quicker car than the standard Golf?
Is it a limited edition?
Is it like any other family hatchback?
-
I'm not dissing the mk3 16v - I just don't think that its a classis like the mk2 gti or the vr6.
-
^ why? just 'because' isnt enough reason.
I think what i comes down to is how different the Mk3 Gti 16v is.

only using two marks of measure here taken from teh performance page on this site.. ( http://www.golfgti.co.uk/viewfeature.asp?featureID=11 )
first off.. 0-60 times.. sorted fastest -> slowest
Mk3 2.8 VR6 - 7.1
Mk2 1.8 16v - 8.0
Mk3 2.0 16v - 8.5
Mk2 1.8 8v - 9.0
Mk3 2.0 8v - 10.1
second off bhp and top speed since they both turned out in roughly the same order...
(by bph then mph )
Mk3 2.8 VR6 174 138
Mk3 2.0 16v 150 134
Mk2 1.8 16v 139 124
Mk2 1.8 8v 120 115
Mk3 2.0 8v 115 124
so the mk3 16v is more powerful and has a higher top speed than the mk2 16v, but isnt quite as quick to 60... whereas you can see the mk3 8v is a sack of sh!t...
Is it a limited edition?
no. there are a lot more 8v gti's out there. i'd like to know how many there are in comparisonto the 8v and vr6.
Is it like any other family hatchback?
in what way?
what difference other than the engine/performance is there from the vr6? none.
-
I just dont thin its got any outstanding qualities that'll make it a classic car.
Its a good car but so was Honda Integra EX16 but nobody remembers that.
-
but the vr6 does right?
therefore.. you classify everything purely based upon performance..
-
To be honest i know little about the VR6, i've no idea on how good it is.
Whether a car is a classic is very subjective.
I've always liked the Mk1 so i got one. There isnt any other Golf i'd consider getting at the moment.
The next car i'd like to get is a Honda CRX (90-92 age) just because ive always liked them.
-
The mk3 16v is a good car, i just had to get the vr6. As for being a classic, its still a bit early to say.
-
Yes and no to the original question.
Some Mk2s will become a classic but they'll be top end 16v, G60 and Rallye.
Mk1 Campaigns have already sealed their future, as have Clippers and Mk1 Cabs. Cabs always have a future in classic cars.
Modified cars won't a future though. They are a labour of love, and when they lose that loving owner they'll rot just as quick as any other car. The reasons they will lose that owner is because people grow older, get more responsibilities, get kids etc. So the pride and joy in the garage will eventually give way to a more practical car.
The trouble with the Mk2 Golf at the moment is that there are simply too many around. We need another 500,000 to be scrapped before they acheive any sort of classic status.
Performance is a non issue. Rarity will be the issue. If performance was important no-one would resotre VW Camper vans.

I would have gone for a vr6 but for me 1200 on the insurance is a bit steep :(
If I have to choose a reliable second 'fun' car after a 'sensible family one' I would like a mk1 cab.. i've always wanted one :)
-
1200 for the insurance???
Why so steep?
-
not because of.. high insurance group.. hmm
guess its a combination and the capacity.. 2.8 compared to 2.0..
and how much its stolen..
and how long i've been driving ;) (under 2 years at the moment...)
breakdown of insurance groups
mk2 8v - 14
mk2 16v - 15
mk3 8v - 14
mk3 16v - 16
mk3 vr6 - 16

16v mk2 is a classic car.
best incarnation of the Golf thus far - as a complete package.
Mk1 - best looks
mk2 Valve best all rounder.

I would agree in that the MK2 16V is a classic, it set a new trend at the time and others had to follow suit so like the original MK1 it is a classic indeed.
The Rallye and G60 are gorgeous cars but not being that popular in numbers in blighty means that not many people have experienced how awesome they are.
