Was drivin around the coast today and it started to judder on me. I didnt think it could be engine as it sounded fine and wasnt makin any judderin kinda noises - you can tell how technical i am
Well my dad is over for a few days and luckily he was in the car with me and said it was likely to be breaks. So I dropped it off on the way home at my local garage, by which time my pedal wouldnt depress atall and if i let it roll in neutral it pulled right up. Im almost certain the rear drivers side break has siezed. Just prayin its not goin to be overly expensive. I had a feelin I was goin to need new front disks soon anyway but didnt need that too.
So, could this be an expensive thing to sort? I only had the rear breaks done about 5 months ago so i dont think they should need changin all together. Also, what are my options with possibly uprating the front disks? Its only a 1.4 but the tiny disks really give that away. If i change the disks will i need different calipers too? and would the rear drums need uprating aswell?
Sorry for the long story.

If you are going to uprate the brakes then you will need to make sure you have everything relevant for the job, I.E. caliper, carrier, caliper bolts, master cylinder, pads and disc. Tbh for your car that all seems like bit of a ball ache.
I would just get the caliper replaced, flush the brake lines, put new fluid in, and get some new front discs and pads put on. There isn't really a call for larger discs on your motor mate, if you want to make the braking more confident on it, then get some braided lines fitted, they will clear up the sponginess and the brake fade as they get hot.

Braided hoses are always an important improvement.
They let all the pressure of braking get to the calipers as they dont expand like rubber hoses do...

I think thats what i expected to hear really. I just wanted to fill the space behind the wheels a little more but for all that messin around il pass. The garage will hopefully be gettin back to me later so i know what its likely to cost and what needs doin so il let u all know and see if im not getin ripped for it.
how much would braided hozes set me back? Might look into it if it helps that much

or
egay (http://search.ebay.co.uk/vw-brake-lines_W0QQcatrefZC6QQcoactionZcompareQQcoentrypageZsearchQQcopagenumZ1QQfromZR10QQfsooZ1QQfsopZ1QQfstypeZ1QQftrtZ1QQftrvZ1QQga10244Z10425QQsacatZQ2d1QQssPageNameZRC0023)
Usually start from around £60 although i got a complete 6 line kit for £42
I think you will only need a 4 line kit aswell as its the fronts that do all the braking on your car.

i had the rears seize on me and can confirm there is hardly and difference in braking with or without them...
-
well iv just spoken to a mate of mine whos in the know and he reconed it may be the break sender (think thats what its called, its been mentioned to me before when the rear breaks died) Would this sound possible? am i right in thinkin thats what splits the breakin between the front and the rear wheels? Coz if thats the case it would make sense. My front breaks have worn down quite a lot and have been gettin very hot recently, i suppose if the sender had gone and the rears are doin none of the breakin the fronts have a lot more work to do and this would be the case.
-
I thought that the drums didn't do any braking apart from when the handbrake was applied. Then again i could be wrong, the fronts will take most punishment, as when braking the weight all shifts onto them.
-
id imagine the rears must do some of the breaking, i dont know like but it seems wierd that they do nothin but act when the hand breaks on. i just hope iv not killed it.

oh no babe... doesnt sound good... :lipsrsealed:
:: han refrains from laughing at phil, just cos she's in a mood over valentines day! ::

80% front breaking 20% rear, to the best of my limited knowledge..... :nerd:
-
well using your obvious lack of knowledge what does it sound like to you bud?
-
80/20 is probably about right
BTW braided brake hoses are a waste of money, unless you are going on a track..
-
If its juddering when braking and your disks have recently been glowing hot i would say your disks are warped and will need replacing. Will no doubt need to flush the fluid and put new in. As mentioned its also a good idea to check the condition of the rubber lines at this stage.
-
it wasnt necessarily when breakin, was all the time really. think thats what made me worry.
Coz im rubbish with all things mechanical on the car what kinda things should i be sayin to the guys at the garage? are there certain things i should ask them to check or change? Dont want to get there, sound dumb and find myself gettin ripped off
-
You havent clipped any curbs lately and bucked a wheel have you?
-
no mate, its def not that coz as i got closer to the garage the break pedal got stiffer and like i said, if i took it out of gear and let it roll it just felt like i was breaking.
