Title: Hi, VW main dealer (who shall remain anonymous) here!
Post by: VWmaindealer on 13 February 2006, 22:13
Hi all

A mate intro'd me to this site this evening and i've been on it since. I work for a main dealer in sales and figure that I can answer a lot of your questions regarding mk 4 and 5 Golfs i've been looking at in the relevent forums.

I'm not here to push my sales  and as such am not going to name my delaership :lipsrsealed: or try and push any of my used/new cars through this site. I will happily (and honestly) answer any questions I can from a dealers perspective and try and explain the odd things us guys sometimes appear to do.

I'll probably live in the Golf 4 and Golf 5 sections of the forum most of the time but anyones welcome to PM me (It's a lonely job being a car salesman....)

Hi All,

Topher, I sold out of R32s back in December but otherwise i would of course....

Dubby, We are not much different to that.  We are £88 including VAT. They try and justify it due to the tens of thousands of pounds we spend on equipment and training. My advice would be use your dealer until your warranty runs out, then find a specialist.

Kompliance, I cannot offer any discount as I don't want my dealer to know that i'm on here as I intend to be as honest as I can and share some behind the scenes knowledge. Sorry.

Welcome to the site.

I'm sure some of us will have questions to ask you as time goes by and it would certainly be interesting to have a maindealer's point of view on certain subjects. I think in the circumstances we should also respect your anonymity.

Nothing to do with any questions about golfs but i am wanting to try and get in to car salesmyself i spend my entire life talking about cars so why not get paid for it!

from your experience is it a necesity to have sales experience, i have worked in a sales environment for 2 and a half years in a non sales capacity so was thinking maybe that would help!

Neaty, Car sales is not rocket science.

If you've been in sales in some form you should have a head start. Understanding cars is only really a small part of it. Understanding people is much more important.

Write to your local main dealers. The big guys offer the best training. Merc, BMW and of course VW. Volkswagen have an incredibly good training program (and we get to play with GTis at Donington Park, R32 at Brands and Touaregs off road at Brands Hatch).  They all run trainee sales programs.  You are better off approaching these guys than the Renaults and Peugeots of this world.

Martinb - Yes it's me. Keep schtum or the cats'll get it

Hi and welcome.
My main dealer offered me a discount on the hourly rate, for my mk1, as it was an older car. Do you know if this is a common thing, or is it worth other members trying this out? Also, what kind of discount can we realistically expect to negiotiate when we buy a second hand car from a main dealer? and is there a preference to cash/credit/no part ex/part ex etc?
Hope these questions help out a few members, if you can answer them.

Neaty, I have worked for other main dealers (BMW Corporate sales and then Merc). I started at BMW with zero sales experience. Fleet or corporate is not a bad place to start as most of your business is conducted over the phone, email and fax so it's big numbers and teaches alot about organisation and time management which then work well for retail sales.

Adamb - Discount on labour will vary from dealer to dealer. Alot of it depends on what mechanics (sorry technicians) the retailer has. Most of our guys now are "new school" and have been trained by VW with all the latest computers and diagnostics. If your local dealer is lucky enough to still have old school mechanics who fix things with spanners not computers they may well sort you out.  It will also depend on how busy their workshop is. They would rather sell discounted hours than have techs sitting around drinking coffee doing nothing.

The discount/cash/part ex thing is a biggie. I will start a thread on this tomorrow. In a nutshell.....

We get commission on selling cars. I really don't want to start discussing how much though. (it is not as much as you'd think tho because....)

We get commission on selling finance products. Therefore starting your opening sentance to the salesman with "it's a cash purchase, whats you best price" is not what he wants to hear.

Part ex - As a rule, it makes no difference whether or not you part ex. Obviously if it's a late VW then we'll resell it but don't think that you can use this as a bargaining tool. The only thing we concentrate on is selling you a car. We enter into the same negotiation when selling on your part ex don't forget.

What a salesman really wants to hear is "i've got a car to part exchange and I know you won't give me what i'm expecting for it but I'm going to finance the rest using VolkswagenFinance". The customer who sits down and says " i've got no part ex and it's a cash deal, whats your best price" rarely gets a deal as good as someone who is honest. We know that 78% of all new cars are bought using someone elses money. Be it bank, credit cards, personal loans or dealer finance.

I will defo start a new thread on teh dos and donts of haggling in the morning.

Keep the updates and inside info coming as this is getting quite interesting.

Just one thing on the above, why would a person be being dishonest by saying he's got no part-ex, or do you mean the people that say this meaning they are selling their present car first etc ? It is feasible though that someone might not have a car and want to pay cash though.
