Im just about ready to sell my mk3 and ive got around £4000-5500. Of course id like to own a 1.8t but at the moment the insurance is just way to high for me so i been thinking about 1.8 non t or possibly a gti diesel. Anyone had good or bad expeirences with these cars and what should i look out for on them.
-
I always hear good things about the PD's but there are so many different diesels engines out there in the mk4 , if your after a diesel make sure you go for the PD130 or PD150
-
the 130 and 150 will be difficult to come by within your budget but are definately worth stretching yourself for  I've got a 130 myself and am more than happy with it  :smug:
The PD's come in 115, 130 and 150 with a 6 speed box. Insurance wise the 115 is a 10, the 130 is a 13 and the 150 is a 14/15 i think.
The PD engines have more torque but the other diesel engines are just as good, they return good economy and have enough performance for most daily driving.
It all depends if you want something that's close to a GTI in performance or want something a bit cheaper for insurance. If its insurance wise then you should be able to pick up a 110 in SE or GT trim very easlily. Richandhazel has just bought a GT TDI 110 and paid around 4K for it

Im insured on my dads leon cupra 150 diesel and would definetly want one but il probably buy it off him when he sells it but thats 2 years away. i been looking on autotrader and diesels look a bit out of the price range for a good one. Anyone own a 1.8 20v or 2.0 8v and what are they like to drive, performance wise, many problems etc?
-
I've only ever driven a 1.8 T, but from what I've read on here, I think the general consensus is that the 1.8 20v (125) is a tad more lively (& better on fuel) than the 2.0 8v (115).
-
If you are used to driving the seat, dont go for the 2.0 8v. My wife has one, and although it's a solid car you will probably be making excuses to drive your dads car all the time. I've never once regretted buying either of the Golf's mind, and touch wood they seem pretty robust if you treat them right.
-
Hey i have a 2.0 8v ^^^ and i love it, it makes a nice grunty engine noise when you boot it, and it is quite quick, considering i only have 115 ponies.. and i can easily do 130mph in it as well
-
I own a 1.8 20V non-turbo and i quite like them. Ok, it's not gonna pull your face off but they are quick, smooth and nice to drive and on paper not that much slower than the turbo (125bhp or 150bhp for the turbo) Only thing i will say is the turbo is much more tunable in terms of re-mapping etc. If you're just gonna keep it standard, maybe go and test drive one and see what you think.
Like Richy said in his previous thread, they stopped making the non-turbo a few years back so if you find one it will be a few years old but you should get a good one for your cash. I Paid 6K a year ago for mine, 1999 T Reg, spotless, just under 60K on the clock, full VWSH. Problems wise, apart from the various common faults every Mk4 suffers from (MAF, Door Lock Mechanism, Window Regs, Lambda probe as i've just discovered) you shouldn't have any problems. If it's done around 60K check the timing belt's been changed cause it will cost you £300 to get it done.
Hope this helps.

I think il go for the golf 1.8 20v if i can find one if not might try the leon 1.8 as they are even cheaper and newer but alot rarer and would need some more money spent to make it look as good (cupra/cupra R bodykit maybe). paulmk4gti how low does yours stand? im just thinking ahead as to if id need to lower it when i put some new alloys on it. Plus how much have you spent on it other than general servicing.
Cheers
-
You will need to lower it if you get new alloys - i've got 18" RS4s on mine but not lowered it yet! It desperately needs it! I'm going to opt for eibach springs i think, seem to offer a decent drop (between 30-40mm) without causing any problems.
To be honest it hasn't cost me much, the main thing to look out for like i say is the timing belt - this had not been done on mine but i got some cash off the price because of it (it'll cost you around £300). If it's not been done it will probably need it on a car that age so use it as a bargaining tool.
Other than that, all i've replaced so far is Engine coolant temp sensor (£20 for the part - easy to fit) but the passenger Door lock mechanism does need replacing (about £70 for new mech i think - more difficult to repair yourself but do-able with a spare afternoon) and just this week found out it needs new Cam Shaft Position Sensor and new Lambda Probe. (both about £70-£80ish for the part i think).
I wouldn't let this put you off, the various engine sensors seem to be the most common faults (the MAF being the most common) but they're all easily replaced and don't cost that much and some of them may even already have been replaced on the car you end up buying.
-
Sounds like my mk3, the engine is solid but the electrics have let it down on more than one occasion. Would you mind posting or emailing some pictures of your mk4 as it is ? cheers
-
Yeah, i'll post some pics, let me wash it first though - it's filthy! I'll sort it at weekend and take some pics.
-
Sorry for the delay, was ill last week. Golf GL what's your email, seem to be having trouble attaching images to this post.
-
Paul i've pm'ed you my email. Im going to look at two 3dr golfs this weekend in indigo blue and one in green (any one know what greens there are on the mk4). The blue ones a 1.8 supposedly in good cond without air con but i also seen very good cond 2.0 in green with air con. both around £4.5k. Of course i got to see them both in the flesh first, but what would you go for and what do you all think of the mk4 in green?
-
Not sure what its called, but the British Racing style green looks nice I reckon. I've got a dark blue one ( the dealer called it Ink blue ) - I think its a pearlescent version of the 'flat' indigo blue. I'll try and get my sig pic sorted so you can see it.
-
Our 2.0 GTI is called Oceananic Green (not too sure about the spelling) it looks pretty similar to the dark green in pictures, but it's slightly blue-ish and looks nice in the sun. I've only seen one other Golf round my area in the same colour and it was a 53 reg. ours is a 2001 on a Y plate.
-
I just got a quote off of elephant and the 2.0 is around £250 cheaper than the 1.8 20v which is quite a saving for a policy in my name. Now power wise how do you think the 2.0gti (115bhp) would compare to my mk3 1.8(90bhp). And does anyone know if there is as much tuning gear out there for the 2.0gti as compared to other models?
Cheers
Adam
-
Blimey. That's surprising. Are you sure they're not comparing it to a 1.8T premium?
-
Definetly not, off of elephant the insurance quotes for a 2.0 gti was £900, 1.8 20v gti £1150 and a 1.8t gti was £2000. I have been driving almost 3 years and have no no claims bonus.
-
my 2.0 is quite fast really, i havent done anything to the engine tho it just got an exhaust (lack of cash) they are not as tuneable as a 1.8T but the engine sounds much more grunty thats for sure

That's the first thing I noticed about the 1.8T, the engine is very quiet & doesn't sound very sporty..... My BMC soon sorted that out , though!
