LOL

 8)

I bet someone does actually have a nice brown mk1 somewhere, with orange interior  ;D

Cars should only come in 3 colours, Black, Grey[Silver], Red...

But I have seen some other colours that look nice...but that wouldnt fit my rule would it :)

Just to remind you all that without the Mk1, you wouldn't have any of the others, so it's a little harsh to say it's 'brown', surely?

I saw a film the other day with THAT car in it. ... tho it was a white one.

Film starred Corey Feldman, was made in like 1987 and was summet to do with a kid failing his driving test and wrecking his dads car ....

'Licence to Drive' with Corey Haim and Corey Feldman. Film was about him borrowing his Grandpa's Caddy and smashing the bejesus out of it. Came home, about to get a b*llocking, and redeemed himself by driving his pregnant mother to the hospital, backwards (as you do).

His girlfriend (named Mercedes) drove the white GTi cab.

Mk1 and Mk2 built by designers who actually drove cars!!!!
Mk3 safety kicked in, mk4 built by people with fat wallets, mk5 woh lets make it look like every other piece of trash on the road and ride on the success of all the other golfs
Title: Re:No Offence
Post by: antgti on 25 March 2004, 22:56
Oh dear,

Mk 1 looks the bollox, if i see one on the road i have to stare,

Mk2 never cut it for me, always looked like a fat mk1 and i still don't really like them.

Mk3 looks tough, there is a yellow one driving around sittingbourne with the black headlights and it looks tres bien,

Mk4 this is the toughest looking one, especially in anniversary guise or R32. it oozes street cred, Ok it handles like a bloody oil tanker but it's just so comfy.

Mk5 well i'm sorry if i wanna buya peugeot 307 then i'll go to Peugeot, sorry Mk5 is a307 with VW badge, not my cup of tea.

All so i'll add again, my car does handle like sh!t in the corners, but i have never been beaten off the lights by any Mk2 or Mk3 golfs, you got to admit the Mk4 PD Diesel goes liek stink from a start.

All golfs are nice, (apart from mk2's and mk 5's) :P :P

Personally I like all Golfs,
 ;D

but...

Mk1 would be my fave, followed by Mk4, then Mk2 and Mk3 closely behind that.
Not made up my mind about the Mk5.

Why do I have a Mk4 and not a Mk1 you ask!!! .... I wanted something a bit newer (i.e. more reliable and less hassle)

Not with 0-60 times of 9.1 and 8.9secs its not.

same people who think 8v has more torque than 16v i bet

It does lower down the rev range ... we get 127lb/ft (or wotever it is) at 5400rpm where your probably "just" under that ... but u rev higher and get your 140lb/ft (or wotever u get) at around 6400rpm.

U need a torque graph to explain better.... we have 127lb/ft @ 5400rpm

U have (insert higher figure here) @ (insert higher RPM here)

U have MORE torque ... just at a different part of the rev range... u get ur torque higher up and also get more... we achieve ours lower down the range and get less than u when at our max...

that make sence??  ???

I just wish they had made the mk5 smaller than the mk4 but instead its even bigger. Ho hum wot do I know tho!
Title: Re:No Offence
Post by: Cupra Turbo on 29 March 2004, 19:22
It kinda had to be bigger.. the mk4 was slightly bigger than the mk3 and the new Polo is roughly the same size as the mk3.

The lupo is now the small VW .. and Im sure the Golf mk1 was the small VW back in 1976.

Lupo size = mk1 golf
Polo size = mk3 golf

Its just evolution
Title: Re:No Offence
Post by: CheshireGTI on 29 March 2004, 19:40
Does that mean the Golf mk10 will be the size of a bus?

I just don't like the mk5 at all, don't know who designed it but they need to be taken round the back for a beating. IMO

Having said that it may still grow on me!  :-\
Title: Re:No Offence
Post by: Cupra Turbo on 29 March 2004, 20:38
I might be wrong here... but at the moment the Golf is the third car in to range of VW's

(Smallest to largest the golf is third)

Back in 1976 the Golf was the smallest (i think)

if VW keep it all like this and dont add any more cars in ... eg

Lupo
Cricket (made up new car)
Polo
Golf

Then the Golf will always be the third smallest and it wont alter in size much, as long as the others dont. Vw dont want two cars almost identical in size.

MK1 - badass car, love the low slung rear end

MK2 - improvement on the MK1, love this car too, thats why i drive one

MK3 - ewwwwww

MK4 - this one grew on me, looks nice

MK5 - hmmmm. . . . still undecided, dont like the rear lights!!
looks alrite from the front!

i dont think VW will ever quite cut it like they did with mk1&2
Title: Re:No Offence
Post by: wolfrace on 18 May 2004, 16:06
You are absolutely right - the rear lights are terrible!
Would have thought they could have come up with better?

I quite liked the Mk4 as soon as I saw it. The mk5 is going to take time I'm afraid! :-\

i reckon they're all good cars, cos i've driven them all bar the Mk5, i agree it does look like a Peugeot 307, but if someone gave me one for free i would gladly take it off their hands!!!! ;)

i think the worst golf though is the Mk3, the standard ones are horrific but when they are done up with big wheels, i think they look the biz.
i'm lookin for a Mk1 GTI though as a project car.

Well I was after a cabby, so only really had the option of the Mk1 or Mk3... don't anybody pretend there's actually a Mk4 cabby, I'll give you Mk3.5 at a stretch....

Agree the Mk3 is a bit of a barge, but I was after a larger, safer car (ABS, side impact, airbags, etc, etc).... my other options were the old Audi Cab or break the bank and go with the Saab93/AudiA4... so the Golf Mk3 Cab's pretty small and nimble compared to most of those, certainly will be once I've finished the engine mods and suspension.

Plus I always wanted a Golf and this way I'm only breaking the bank slowly!

Still think my next motor is an Audi S4 Cabby... Still not gonna beat my boss's DB7 Volante though :(

Personally, I didn't like the Mk4 when it came out.  At the time, I thought Mk3's were ace.

By the time I could finally afford a decent Golf, the Mk4 had grown on me so much that I bought one.  ;)

It's not a rocket (its a 1.8 non turbo), but with my dropped suspension and super wide tyres it handles nimbly now.  0-60 in just over 9secs aint too bad either.  Hopefully the remap I'm planning will bring the 0-60 into the 8.x second range.  I love it.

Not too sure about the Mk5 yet.  Maybe its a grower too.

I love 'em all...As was said before, its an evolutionary path.

Mk1 in Lhasa Green
Mk2 in Oak Green
Mk3 in Chilli Red or Dusky Mauve
Mk4 in Silver or Black
Mk5 in silver or black

I can afford a 4, I've got a Toledo at the minute which is basically a Golf/Bora, but I really want a Mk3...
