Title: What can I do to my mk2 1.8GL Auto?
Post by: OmeN on 18 November 2003, 01:44
For more acceleration?

Currently the car is standard, except its lowered a bit heh.
Im not a millionare, so might have to be reasonable comments.

I wouldn't spend a lot of money as its not really a performance car. One cheap mod you can do is go to a scrapyard and get a gti 8v cam.

Seriously ?

What sort of money and work would be involved? [I'll do a search on that]
I dont know what the cam does...so i'll read up on that as well :)

I take it i'd need to inform my insurance company ?

The gti cam opens the valves for longer, so effectively lets a little extra mixture in and out. Some geezer i knew did the same mod on his scirocco, got it for under ?50.

Yup, just spoken to a guy who knows, and I should be able to pick one up for ?25, and get it fitted within an hour right?
Title: Re:What can I do to my mk2 1.8GL Auto?
Post by: golfvr6 on 18 November 2003, 17:43
Sounds about right, you might as well get a new cam belt and tensioner done at the same time (unless you've done it recently).

Post by: OmeN on 18 November 2003, 17:47
ok...any particular make?

Would someone be able to give me info on what sort of webber carb I could fit to my model?
And roughly what price I should pay new or second hand?
Lastly [for the moment heh] how long would it take to fit?

Im a TOTAL newb at this stuff...my friends work in a garage and can fit it all for me ?20perhour, I trust them, good lads. :)

A webber carb is about 200 bar. A little trick to try with your existing carb, drill out stage 2 jet slightly, you will then get a slightly richer mixture when you boot it. This works a treat! don't do it on stage 1 jet as you will flood the engine!

You want a webber that will replace a pierburg 2e2 carb for automatic. Your car is listed as Golf II carb 1.8 gu 66kw, i couldn't find any webber carbs though. Try going on the deals and discounts section, contact the geezer at the Leeds branch, see if he can help.

its an 89 model
Title: Re:What can I do to my mk2 1.8GL Auto?
Post by: OmeN on 19 November 2003, 19:42
I heard about this on another forum and the answer was yes for his 1.6 driver.

This weber replacement...is the standard replacement the one i want for more acceleration or is there like some special gti one for the job?

Yes you can. The 1.8 carb cam is better than the 1.6, the gti 8v cam will go in both.

Mmm kay, another quickie.

I currently have a K&N replacement filter in my standard air box, is it worth drilling a few holes or replacing with a proper bolt on? or neither.
:)

I was confused by anothe post on here, people just started slagging each other off hehe.

Post by: golfvr6 on 25 November 2003, 15:31
K&N induction kit or panel filter won't do a lot for your car. Unlike the gti the carb models aren't set up for performance.

A weber is a better carb than the pierburg unit you have at the moment and gives less hassle. although you will have to convert to manual choke but you get all the cables in the kit.

A lot of people haven't got a clue about how to set a 2E2 carb up.

i have just had my engine tuned and the guy advised me to take the k and n panel filter off as it dont stop carb freeze, says it would be better to get one that sits where the original one does as this prevents carb freeze

So I cant get a twin fitted ?

BUT - Your saying the replacement one can be pritty good and if set up properly will do fine? or are you saying the one on here probably isnt set up properly?
Thanks mate

Most people seem to think that the weber replacements are worth the money, they are supposed to perform better and improve fuel consumption, also they are supposed to be easier to set up.

"Most people seem to think" So your saying they are wrong and dont know what they are talking about???
Or you genuinly mean that it seems to be the way forward from their opions?
Soz mate - always hard interpriting text.

use oxy  torch cleaners (little round files to clean the gun on gas torches..great for the job and loads of sizes)
