I have a prob with my mark 1 golf gti convertible. I decided to give the car a full service so i changed the fuel filter, distribution cap, roter arm, spark plugs, uprated spark leads, k & n induction air filter, fan, battery, fuel leads and the timeing belt. Now the car doesn't want to start. Anyone who can help please e-mail me on eye_m_4_u_2_n_v@hotmail.com

Looks like you've done a fair bit of work there. Could be anything, as 'free' says, you've broken down the fuel system so it may take some time for the pressure to build up again. Is your firing order definately correct? Maybe one of the sprockets moved a tooth out when you did the timing belt? Maybe the intermediate sprocket moved which could mean your ignition timing is out?
.........just some ideas. :-\

Can't say i know too much about the MK1 and your problem. But just wondered wether it is possible to fit the fuel filters the wrong way round on MK1's. If not, then i agree that it could have something to do with the timing belt set up.

narrowed down the problem to fuel filter. everything else seems to be working fine.

Have you checked that fuel is getting to the engine? did you check the timing with one of those strobe guns? the intermediate shaft always moves when doing the timing belt.

Very difficult to do the timing belt without moving that intermediate sprocket. Usually a good idea to take the rotor cap off and make sure the rotor arm is pointing at the TDC mark on the distributer housing.

Easy mate! make sure cam and crank are accurately aligned, then use a timing gun and turn the distributor as necessary, as long as you don't knock the intermediate shaft out too much!

Ok, I know where you are coming from, but............for examplel,what happens if you approach the engine green i.e. no components attatched?
You can't use the timing gun until the engine is started. Engine has to be statically timed first. Camshaft and Crankshaft alligned at TDC and then make sure you're rotor arm is pointing at aforementioned distributer body mark. Start car and then use strobe gun to accurately adjust ignition timing. :-\

Correct, but i've never managed to get the intermediate shaft spot on, it always goes a bit out , so i then use the gun. Have you got any locking tools for doing the job? its much easier with the proper vw tensioning tool.

timing was done using strobe gun. narrowed it down to fuel or electrical problem. read the haynes manual but its not that helpful in this sort of area.

I have done all of the above and still I am having problems. Just wondering if anyone out there has any sites relevant to my problem. Many thanks to all that have offered their advice and opinions. But guys I still need more help. Respect ;D

I thought you had narrowed it down to the filter? Still playing up?
VR6, I don't have the locking tools or even the proper tensioning tool. I can see they would help, but I, like you, have always managed without them. You're right in what you say, its almost impossible to get the intermediate shaft in exactly the same place. I usually end up having to rotate the distributer body slightly to get it back to TDC and then of course its out with the strobe.

Try it! i used it when i helped do modulator's cam belt on his 16v. It really does make a difference.

Yeah theres 2 to choose from, I oredered the smaller one as it seems easier to get around the brake servo.
takes a matter of seconds to do rather than minutes with a pair of circlip pliers.

Circlip pliers are pants for the job as they keep slipping off the tensioner. The tool only works on genuine vw tensioners, not GSF sh!t!

I prefer to use a small cabbage and a scale model of dorset.
