My 8v (digifant) has a problem where it sometimes stalls when you dip the clutch and the revs drop. Also, sometimes when I am sitting at traffic lights or whatever, it keepings revving itself without me touching the accelerator. This can be quite embarrassing as the car sitting next to me thinks I'm looking for a race. Particulary bad if its a police car/porsche/old granny/mother and child in a metro/etc. Whatever way you look at it, its not good. I have a feeling that the revving and stalling are in some way linked, its like its trying to get it to idle properly and it cant. Any ideas peeps?
Cheers

mine does that sometimes but it doesnt stall. Changing the spark plugs sorted that problem for me. ???
-
The spark plugs have just been changed

Idle stabilising valve? is there an idle switch fitted or just a potentiometer? I think its either a faulty sensor or a vacuum leak. Also could be a faulty cam sender sensor. Check for vacuum leaks, and maybe get the car on a fault reader.
-
Sounds like an air leak to me. It's just finding it that will br the prob. Have a look where the speedo cable rubs on the air intake, if it looks worn squeze it, if the revs go mad you've found your leak, tape it up for a quick fix! Sqeezing any of your air related pipes may give a rusult..
-
OK cheers I'll have a dig round see if I can find a leak
-
my mk3/16v was doing that until i recently had the cam and other belts changed.. they didnt mention messing with anything else
-
Your right it could be many things. It's just if it's free reving it sounds like it's taking in air from somewhere without the throttle open. A squeez on the pipes wont do any harm and will only take 30 seconds, worth a look i reckon.
-
I'd go along with that, check for vacuum leaks then if ok check the electrical sensors or try a fault reader.
-
Sounds like ISV to me, have a read of this:-

Indeed Rich, it was the ISV. Gave it a clean tonight and its idling perfectly now. :D
Cheers

Ah brilliant.........glad that worked.

I think this typical problem with digifant engines types, if I'm correct, can be as a result of other things other than ISV. There have been many posts on this subject as you're all aware. Some lucky ones get problem resolved just by changing ISV, for the unlucky ones the search goes on.
I have replaced the ISV unit almost a week ago
but still get bouncy revs when its cold. :-[
-
Must be something different then because mine was doing it all the time, not just when cold
-
Coolant temperature sender?

Remember to also clean out the idle screw drilling to the right of the throttle body, as this gets clogged up with oil mist and when this gets blocked you won't idle, just stall out. Most noticable when the weather is damp and the engine cold, as the oily gunge gets moist.
Clean this out and a lot of the problems can be resolved, without cleaning the ISV.
I normally have to do this 2x a year with normal driving milage.

I had the exact same problem on my 8v.. it took time to resolve the issue.
There is a petrol pip coming from the back and i think it connects to the injection system with a jublee clip.. the pipe had rotted away and the same with the jublee clip so the pipe was sucking in air and petrol which caused this to rev and stall.. its cost me 3 quid to fix and its been the same since.. Hence the ?30 tuning i paid to sort this out.
Have a look you might be experiencing the same the problem. ;)

Whereabout is this pipe that connects to the injection system? I'm no where near fixing the problem. Still revving itself up when cold. ISV changed, temp. sensors cleaned, even changed some air hoses. I'm at my wits end. Costs mounting up.... SOS!!!!!
-
Cost mounting up....changed ISV, temp sensor, air hoses.... bouncy revs still persists when car starts from cold, jerky in 1st and sometimes 2nd gear.....problems driving me mad ...
I now rely on spirits to give a sound sleep each night, namely Southern Comfort and Jack Daniels.... SOS!! Help!!
:(

Ok let me try and explain where the pipe is, look at your engine at the rocker cover, where the cap is where you put in oil just above it to the right a little going back about 2 inch onto a steel block should a 0.5cm pipe connecting to the steel block, petrol runs through this and into your engine, check the dublee clip and check the pipe..
good luck!! :)

I cleaned my ISV out a month or so ago and it still wanders sometimes. Doesn't do it that often though.
Also going off the subject a bit. When I first braught my MK 2
Golf GTI 8V Digifant about 10 months ago all the lights worked, put it in for a service in May and the guy said the reverse lights were not working.
I hadn't noticed them work since I was told and the other day I noticed when I put the car in reverse they have started working again, strange! something must be dodgy.

if your car is a k-jet and is constantly hunting when idling, i.e. it cant settle at a certain RPM but will flucuate up and down say by 150rpm, then you need to get the CO adjusted
its adjusted via v.long 3mm allen key that goes into a small hole near the behind the metering head on the air box.
im not sure what the ideal setup for an 8v is but for a 16v your looking for 2.0%
this is good for 16v's setup :-

Many thanks Gaz, Davo and Gambit.....Will take the necessary action as advised. I'll keep you posted. Cheers.

If you mean co content in the exhaust, i think you want 0.5 to 1.5% :)

Just an update really as promised. Been agonising for a couple of months since I got my valver.
The kangaroo stance when in traffic, the stalling, pinking and strange noise when under load is all down to the timing. It was way out, distributor had a crack inside, rotor arm needed replacement. Job done by a local mechanic and car is riding great.
Was on the Motorway on Thursday last week and thought I was living dangerously doing just over 100mph. It was sheer fear- provoking experience. Done 100 in standard mk2 a few times but this experience is none bar 1.
Bouncy revs not stopped competely, 75 percent better than b4. Changed leaky water pipe under the radiator but still getting temp light warning every couple of days after topping up water. Also got to sort out gear oil leak in the new year. Hope I would be able to get a clean bill of health in Jan in time to join you guys at Newark.
Not expecting any comments. Just to share my experiences with everyone and especially all those who provided helpful comments to my postings. Apologies for this length thread, couldn't help myself. ;D
