me & my mate have just a mk1 with the intention of obviously having it as 'the project car' we were wondering what the best/easiest engine upgrade was?
we have read that a polo g40 engine will go in very easily without much work, anyone know of any other ideas...just put em down
cheers
-
I take it it's a 1.1 or 1.3?
-
would like to know the same for a 1.5 carb
cheers

its a 1.1, literally down to a bare shell, getting a respray then thinking about doing the engine next.
so any ideas...
cheers

1.8 gti from mk2. cheaply available and should be a bolt as you go i think..
-
K jet late Mk1 engine is the easiest or a 16V conversion. although I know of a Mk1 with a 20V turbo now this is a lot of work
-
VR6 will go in with a bit of swearing :D
-
vr6 powered mk1 know that would be sweet!
-
not too sure about the vr6 lump, sounds good but i think it goes against the light weight principle of the mk1, it makes the front end far too heavy! the 2.0 16v is a good option! if you have the time money and know how do the 1.8 turbo route!

For the 1.1, the easiest route would probably be a G40. If you're looking for a 1.8 lump, the O/S engine mount off the 1.8 car would need to be removed and rewelded into the 1.1 as they're different. Then you'd have to scrounge all the fuel system off a GTI too.
For the 1.5, the engine mount is the same as the 1.8 but you'll also need to change the fuel system.
If you're going to go through the hassle of changing the engine, you're better off doing a 16v conversion. It's the same amount of hassle as putting in a different engine with only 1 minor wiring loom to sort out.
A 2.0 16v with 1.8(KR) cams is 150bhp straight out of the box.

Thats me boy  when you say loom, take it you mean the ecu too.
My 1.5 has a 4 speed box, take it the 1.1 has too. what box and other bits would be needed to change to 5 speed.
Could i use my 1.5 shafts, hubs etc?
Brake upgrade would also be needed.
cheers

If i were you i'd have a word with matey boy in the 'For Sale' section - Baz? He's breakin a MK1 GTI, get the complete gear linkage, box, shafts and brakes.
When i say loom, take the loom from the dizzy to the ECU. You can use the MK1 K-Jet loom as it has the same sensors.
-
Not in a rush for bits at the mo. Just after info. got a mate with a Mk1 gti box
which loom would be best as I would need to change the fuel system anyway.
Bits needed:
Lump - A 2.0 16v with 1.8(KR) cams
Modified manifold ?
Loom - ?
ECU - ?
Fuel system - MK1 K jet 1800?
GTI Gear Box, linkage and shafts
Not to sure what you mean by "take the loom from the dizzy to the ECU"
Thanks for the help.

You'd have to buy a special exhaust manifold off Ashley or another make, as the 8v one doesn't fit.
Basically, the only additional wiring the K-Jet 16v has over the K-Jet MK1 system, is the ECU which has a mapped program so it can advance the ignition timing without a vacuum unit. There's a multi plug connector on the 16v dizzy that runs to the ECU. That's all you need.
Different people do it in different ways but that's the only way i've seen it been done without bodging looms etc. Other people use the complete MK2 16v engine wiring loom but it's not needed as the VW K-Jet engines work the same way with the same sensors!!(Except the dizzy wiring.)
Where abouts are you based, Tucker?
-
Cheers Mr V  got ya now.
I will have to change the loom anyway. All this K-jet talk, take it to use the k-jet 16v and not the diggi lump.

All the MK2 16v Golfs are K-Jet, mate.
The reason why i asked about where you are is because if you can make it to one of the Ace Cafe meets, i could introduce you to g60rge or ManicGTI who have already done the conversion to their MK1s. There are also a couple of other lads who are quite knowledgable on the subject too
-
i have been trying to decide which way to go with my engine,i was thinking of a big bore 1.9 8v but i have been speaking to midland vw and they say the 2.0 16v is the way to go! so watch this space! i hope she will fly!
-
Keep us posted mate
I may have a pair of KR cams for sale soon...
-
I can get hold of a 1.8 16v lump, box and bits . what are they like?
Cheers
Tucker
-
Use the 1.8 cams. The heads are the same. But if you can, try and get hold of a 2.0 bottom end, mixed with those 1.8 cams and you'll have about 150bhp!
-
Better get me that bottom end then
Thanks for the info mr v, will prob give ya a shout at some point
Cheers

No worries mate

hi, why are the 1.8 cams better than the standard ones? :undecided:i am guessing the kr cams are from the 1.8 16v? rob
-
^^^^^ sorry, that was me posting!! not sure why i am sum bird called anni??? very odd! oh well back to normal now!! lol
-
lol!
The KR(1.8 16v) engine has a longer duration inlet cam
-
^^^ ok..... but can you give me that in laymans turms? what will this do to the car will the power kick in lower down?? i am a bit of a retard when it comes to cams!!
-
The KR cam has a bigger inlet lobe on the cam which means the inlet valve stays open longer than a normal cam
More fuel, air = power
cheers

Exactly
