......I'm getting a wiff of petrol coming into the car, mostly when its stopped at lights or in traffic.
I've noticed it a little for a few weeks now, but it was really bad when I drove into London last night. I thought it was just exhaust fumes from the congested traffic.
Anyways back to the point - what could it be??!!Will it go bang??!!
I'm booking it into the garage right now!! :-\
MK3 16V
-
Wheres it coming from? the engine compartment?
-
......I assume it is. I just got it really strong when still in traffic. Thats as much as I can say about it. :-\
-
Check the rubber hoses that go on the injector rail, a common problem it seems.
-
Cheers VR6, I'll have a look.
Its booked in for next Tuesday, I'll mention your advise to the boys at the garage.
In the meantime, do you think its safe to drive it??
-
In a word no, i would check the hoses , if they are leaking you might just need to clips. I wouldn't drive it as thats asking for trouble.
-
Ah Pants!......hate public transport!! :(
Thanks again for the advise.
-
Got it sorted, boys at the garage replaced the afore mentioned fuel hoses and clips as they were corroding.......
........but
It still really stinks of petrol, boys at the garage said its likely to be the vapour from spilt petrol during repair. Anyways booked in for next Friday to get checked out again if the problem still there.
Could it be anything else causing this tho??
I know the garage well, run by these old boys, not spotty oik Kevins.
-
Not being funny mate, but surely you can find the leak yourself! just follow the smell. Where does smell strongest?
-
.....well I did, but dont know enough to really have a dig around. Like i said, the boys in the garage had a good go at it.
Just saw your other mail, youre in Woking - I'm based in Guildford, fancy having a peek at it for me?? :-\
-
I would but not sure when i can at the moment.
-
Cheers.
Well if you get time before Next Friday, gimme a shout. Its doing my head in now, quite literally.

I'll put up my email address and if you drop me a mail I'll reply with my number.
Omar :)
-
OK mate i'll see what i can do.
-
Is it still stinking?
-
.........yeah when I'm at the traffic lights or stuck in traffic. Maybe its just vapour from when they fixed it??
Have only done 10m since it was at the garage, do you reckon it'll be worth giving it a good run today to get rid of whats there??
I dont know - I really dont go beyond checking oil, brake and water levels - pathetic I know.
BTW - office is at the bottom of the high street, near George abbot and White house pubs.
-
mine does that sometimes if i've been gunning it, my old car did too.. so i just ignore it :) lol
-
There shouldn't be a strong smell of petrol at all. Does the car run alright?
-
its not really that strong.. and it goes vrooom ;)
-
The vapour would have gone ages ago, start the engine, there should be no petrol smells coming from under the bonnet.
-
BlackGti - that makes me feel really good about it thanks.
Soz... the Stella musta went to my head.
-
..........damn, I think its exhaust fumes you know.
Nay mind, its goes into the garage on Friday - will let you know what happens if youre still interested ???
-
I have the same fumes smell in my cabin; found the cause today.
Check the breather pipe that comes from the top of the rocker cover diagonally down to the engine block. If it has a split down the seam, the fumes will be coming into the cabin from there.
It is not obvious visually, you need to check it by hand.
-
...thanks for the input.
-
.......it was exactly what 'Onge' suggested!! The boys sorted it for 30squid.
.........smell that??...........no?.............neither can I!! its all good again.
Cheer fellas and soz for boring everyone with this drawn out saga ;)
