Title: what's my 1600 driver's BHP
Post by: cmg on 18 May 2003, 18:54: I'm currently fitting a K&N air filter & air ram cold air feed onto my 1989 1600 driver , but to fit the cold air pipe I need to know the BHP of my engine ( so I know how much of the filter to mask off ) the engine is compleatley standard . Any help would be greatly appriciated as I cant find the info anywhere .

Your Golf 1600 Drivers standard output should be
75 BHP.
I know coz I used to have one, but I reckon mine was down on power due to the crappy standard Pierburg 2E2 Carb. This type of carb is well known for going out of tune easily with the feeling of flat spots under hard acceleartion.
Your much better of fitting a direct replacement webber carburettor as available for around ?164.00 from German and Swedish Car parts. Part no: 18114 for a manual car.
It will give u better fuel economy, driveabilty and most of all, performance! It should give u more torque than raw horsepower but still worht it.
I have fitted one to my 1990 mk2 1.8 GL and it makes sooo much difference.
There is no point in going to the trouble of ram air and a cold air filter without the webber carb as you will still have the standard unreliable version, and will not achieve your planned modifications true potential.

Don't do it - you'll get carb icing in cold weather. By all means use a K&N panel filter in the standard airbox, but retain the air diverter valve as in cold weather your Weber needs warm air from the exhaust manifold to avoid icing the carb and causing running problems.
