Post by: daros on 16 November 2003, 14:57
I have just taken delivery of my 91H 8v GTi and there are one or two things not funtioning and was hoping you could help me out.  :) They are as follows;

1. MFA (only shows time, rest of functions not working. Have tried the discon battery/checking fuses route)

2. Rev Counter

3. Engine temp. guage

4. After-market JVC cd-radio not functioning

Any help with these matters would be greatly appreciated!!

Thnx

David :)

Hi

With regards to the MFA & Rev counter:

This is a very common problem with post 1990 golfs, unfortunately it cannot be repaired cheaply as the whole instrument panel needs to be replaced.

A company (the name escapes me) repairs them for ?140 + VAT(!)

It's cheaper to get one from the breakers but they are very rare, you need to ask for the single 24 pin units.

I have one for sale, let me know if you need it.

You should check that the MFA stalks working.

You could check the MFA stalk, but why would this cause the rev counter to fail?

Same problem..  Looks like we have to get new clocks..  Simple to change though, all you need is a phillips screwdriver!

I have a set of clocks with single plug. It shows 91,000 on the clock and is fully working.

It took me about 2 months to find one and now I have a spare!

Only asking ?50 + delivery which is what I paid for it.

If your lucky enough to have a Golf 8V with under 91,000 then I don't know!

Otherwise you can place a drill in the end of the speedo cable and wrap a elastic band around the handle and wait!

I have to change mine, can you give me a few instructions please.

Don't I have to take the steering wheel off?

It  would make it easier but you don't have to.
1 - U need to remove the radio.
2 - pull knobs off of the heater/air unit. pull it out, remove connections
3 - Now you need to find the screws holding the facia on
   - there should be some where the radio and heater bits were
     one behind the light switch
and maybe a couple at either end of the facia
(tip - it will just fall off when you've found all the retaining screws ,     i.e dont YANK IT!

now two screws at the top of the clocks need removing
then tilt clocks forward, reach behind to disconnect the speedo cable
(this can be tricky, it has got a plastic bit you have to press while you are pulling at it)
thats it, apart from the wireing plug, pull it out.  and you may have a vacume pipe, pull it off

all that with a phillips and a lot of swearing!!!!!!!!!!
