Title: central locking
Post by: skidoo110 on 16 November 2003, 10:28
My central locking has just packed up... sh!t!
fitted as an extra by vw when the car was new, also fitted a clifford alarm 2 weeks after buying the car.

The alarm still arms and disarms, but the buttons in the door dont work anymore.

been back to the alarm people and they say the vw central locking motor is buggered.

how can i prove this without spending a fortune at vw please?

i thought all mk3 had central locking as standard operated by vacuum pump located in boot

This is true. All mk3's. All vacuum pump operated!

well if the pump in the boot really is knackered its really easy to just get one and replace yourself. be sure tho coz i had to replace the one on my old polo and it was 120 quid...

This is true also. They are expensive. They also slow down over time. Still work fine but nowhere near as good as when new!

my problem was that there was a leak (caused by a fault in the locking petrol cap) and when locking the car the motor wouldn't shut down, it eventually killed it

Jeeze, how long did it take to figure that out? How many motors did you go through before tracking it down to the fueling cap cover? Nightmare!

I was thinking of getting remote central locking fitted. Is it easy to do? Where should i start? Any advice?

um none.. :)

local vw+alarm specialist sorted it for me.. i fitted the pump myself.. the central locking thingy for the petrol cap never worked when i got the car, they're only 20 quid.. the prob originally came from the doors not locking/unlocking due to the leak... hate pnuematic stuff.. reminds me to check me golf and see if the pump is the same as my polo had..
