Title: rod change to cable change...mk2 16v...whats needed?
Post by: Veedub1989 on 02 February 2006, 18:16
ive currently got a 2y 16v gearbox which is running like crap. I have a 9a 2.0litre 16v block and cable change gearbox.

1) does anyone know what parts are needed to convert to the cable change box? is it worth the extra hassle or am i better off sticking with rod change? i.e. what are the advantages of cable over rod change...

2) i heard that you can change the cams from the KR head to the 9a head...which way round is it? i.e. KR inlet cam for 9a exhaust cam...

thanks guys in advance.....i gotta get my valver up and running properly!

You got it right kr inlet and keep in 9a exh cam as it is same as kr exh cam. I have not to long swopped over from rod box to cable change in my mk2 only cos got box with quaife diff in cheap. you will need box, flywheel and clutch, cables and gear lever. Will have to drill new holes to bolt in gear lever assembly (easy) and thats it.

has your new cable change box got hydraulic clutch? if so you will need the pedal setup from a suitable donar and drill some holes in the fire wall.
everything else is as shaft69 says

Or you could just convert it from hydraulic to manual. Much easier than changing pedal boxes.

I thought about trying to fit the cable change box when i put a 2.0 lump into my valver but couldnt be arsed with the hassle of finding another scrapper-instead i went for an 8v gearbox which was in perfect condition 3 months ago but now whines and grumbles  Also made feck all difference to economy!

I swapped both cams over but mine are quite noisy- i guess this is because the 170k Audi engine was more worn than my 131k KR lump and the cams are a tiny bit loose?

Is it easy to convert to manual? That sounds my kind of mod

To convert to manual you still need the cable change but simply ditch the hydraulic clutch for the already existent manual one. I think you replace the hydraulic ram on the box for a manual rocker. Not sure where you get them from though. Swithing to a cable lever box is simple enought too. Just take yours out and bolt the cable one in its place.

Sorry forgot to mention, I used cable clutch gear box kit from seat gearbox, as it is same box with cable. kit cost me £85 from seat and manual adj cable.

hey matey, have you got any pics of this set up? i want to switch to cable change at some point and wasn't sure what to do with hydrolic/manual clutch? been told the seat set up is a bodge but i can't see why it would be if its manufactured for the job? don't fancy mutilating my fire wall to get the hydrolics in there!

I have one of these hydro to cable conversions on my 20vt. It's like a L shapped arm which pushes into the hole the hydraulic piston once lived. it pivots in the cover of the L. The cable then attaches to the front of the 'box to opperate it all.

I believe TSR sell the conversion kit, but charge you £120ish which is loads more than just buying all the bits yourself. I think they're all VAG bits anyway. the cable is a 1.3 mk2 one I can tell you that much!

At the end of the day the 02A 'boxes are a lot stronger than the 020 ones. That's the main reason for swapping over.
