Hi, I have been told to steer clear of the older GT Tdi 110 5 Speed as it has ' a different engine to the 6 speed and higher BHP models in the GT range.'
Is this true? What is the difference and the actual facts on this car. I saw a great one this weekend but it's the older 5 speed and now i'm feeling like i shouldn't buy it?
Any advice would be excellent.

As far as I'm aware the 6 speed boxes are mated to the Pump Duse engines - these generally have around 20-30% more torque than the older models as well as being more economical
Best bet is to ask Richandhazel as he's just bought a GT TDI 110 i believe.........
-
there's nothing wrong with the older cars, nothing at all. so they might not be as fast or tunable as the pd engines, but if you wanted outright performance you wouldnt be buying a diesel car at all, right ?
infact vw have abandoned the pump duse design now and returned to a common rail diesel engine as its far more economical.
-
Thanks, the thing is i'm hoping to just have something that gets me from A-B and back to A quite economically and safe. i drive a 1.8 Driver Mk3 now and that was fine.
So there isn't anything bad about the non PD engine, it's just not as fast and tuneable? I know i wont tinker with the car engine anyways!
Thanks again

Yep, I have a 110 that I am more than happy with. For the budget that I had (5K) I had a lot more to chose from with the 110 and according to Parkers it was the most economical. So far, can't argue, I'm averaging between 50 to 55 mpg!
-
Thanks for the reply, what sort of miles did you get on your car with the budget? I'm hoping to see one this weekend, Green 3 Door Gt TDi 110 with 54k on clock, full history and Cambelt changed last month on service. Could get for £6,200 Sound like a good deal or average?

Mine is high mileage, but it only had 1 owner from new and came with full VAG service history so I was happy. Oh and I got it for £3995 which was well under budget!
-
So is havinga high mile car ok? Only reason i ask is i haven't had a VW Mk4 before, need it for a few years and economy matters, else i'd be trying for a 4-mo.
What sort of things should i be looking for? Should i keep under a set mileage? Looking for either a gtTdi 110 or 115/130 6 speed.
Thanks

I know a lot of people are put off by high mileages, however, I would rather have a high mileage vehicle that has been looked after than a low mileage vehicle that has been thrashed and abused. Obviously its not always easy to tell but this one did have every stone chip touched up and Autohaus have confirmed all the stamps in the book. The way it drives and looks appears to demonstrate that the previous owner looked after the car and therefore I was happy to pay less than the going rate for the vehicle.

the 110bhp engines not bad, i got me one in 2001 and its still goin strong.
as said, its not as tuneable as the later models but it still has a decent amount of grunt in it!
gotta get one witch has had the cam belt done though, it can get pricey.
also check (if you can) that the window seats/plastic bits have been changed to the metal ones.... mine went (1 was on warranty ) the other wasnt ) and they get pricey.
look forward to 50-55 mpg
me and the missus do quite alot of miles between us (she drives it more, i got a works van )
and it works out v. economical.
that is until i put 18's on and well basically became a self confessed dubnut
good luck with what ever 1 you choose
(and breathe.....my longest post me thinks?!?!)
-
i own a 99 on an s and with 127k on the clock and its just had an mot in DEC and the turbo has gone and other stuff and looks like it could be a new engine or a big re-build(look at my post )
good luck with you purchase and dont let me put u off.
-
mines a 98 on a S, and done 90k, it had 45k on the clock when we got it.
shall i look forward to losing my turbo ?? does anyone know how to make them last a little longer?? :undecided:
or is it just a luck thing?? Richandhazel ???????
great cars though

dont thrash it!!
also the Forte gas treatment is supposed to be good stuff. A bottle of that every now and again should help keep everything nice and clean

the old girl needs a service soon, (looks like saturday fun....if it aint raining)
so i might splash out and go get me some.. has anyone used that diesel 10K boost spray???
i used it on my last car and it worked a treat! (my last car was a petrol!)
i might just give both a go....in 4 a penny and all that trash....
i'll let you know how i get on..

Thats a bit of a sweeping statement isn't it?
-
Well, just an update (and a question).
I bought the car, collected a MkIV Golf Gt TDi 110 3 Door from Edinburgh yesterday, except a few stone chips and 1 scratch the car is lovely! Really pleased.
On the drive back, averaged 60.1 MPG over 210 miles so that just hit home the reason i bought a diesel!
Although, this morning when i accelarated i kinda noticed a slight tapping noise from what seems the corner of the passenger side under the bonnet? although it could just be under there anywhere!
Any ideas or thoughts will be apreciated.
-
nah, no idea sorry m8.
good economy tho'

Hi everyone.............Paul25 the tapping that you can here under the bonnet is a valve called the n75 valve it makes a fast ticking sound yeah , and not to brag but like some may feel i'm doing but there's not a lot i don't know about the 110hp tdi VE rotary pump diesel pump diesel engine but then again i also claim to know a lot about women......enough said.
One of the thing i really like to do is give out good strong correct information to/for anyone who wants or needs it , right onto the fun stuff....Yes the pd 150hp can be chipped to 190whp with only a remap but come on guy's its started with forty more hp in the first place , the second reason it gets such a big bang for the buck is the higher pressure thats used to inject the fuel , that said with just an injector change and a remap or better still a live map ( which i will explain to anyone who cares to know ) 170hp is achievable with these 2 mods .
If you want more , more is available and the only thing stopping one from going to the level or degree i have is £Â£Ã‚£Ã‚£'s , with no change to the internals around 190whp is quite safe but for this your going to need a vnt17 or a hybrid vnt17/20 turbo a large fmic = front mount intercooler plus most of the intercooler pipe work and inlet changed.
My motor started out with the even old first generation 1Z engine 90hp unit which has a wastegate turbo unlike the newer 110hp which has the vnt turbo = Variable vane turbo , it will very shorty be running with a T28bb oil and watercooled turbo running around 30/35psi a large bar and plate intercooler and hopefully when its live mapped will be close to 250hp and 400lbs of torque + a limited slip diff motorsport clutch and lightened flywheel and there's more but i can see your board now.
So when someone tells you that the 90hp or the 110hp none pd engine doesn't tune as well as the 130hp or 150hp pd's you now know different , and when these two pd motors are remapped there's only around 10hp in it.
The chap who had the blown engine did it in fact blow the turbo which usually means all the oil going into the intercooler and makes a very rough sounding noise or did the steelership tell you this because your car lacked power or some times when you put your foot hard on the excellerator it would have no power which is called ( over boosting and limp home mode ) if all that i've ranted on about is so i would suspect it to be your air mass sensor or n75/m18 valves as well or a leak in one of the small vacuum pipes which go to the actuator and n75/m18 valves and control the vanes of the turbo , which i would change out................if its the oil jobby then yes its the turbo seals that have given up the ghost.
P.S........if you want to know more or want more power do not be slow to ask.........l new nothing about these motors and look at me now taking for England come to mind..........pm or email me....1/4 13.025 @ 115mph....now why on earth would you want to go and buy a 1.8T 20v fore..
Hope this helps.
Regards,
Steve.

great source of advice.. i almost cant wait to have my car/turbo break down.

Steve, great post!
The n75 Valve ticking. Is it supposed to do this? If not should i get replaced?
Many thanks again for a great post.
