just gave my car a good wash and checked the oil and coolant stuff like that , and started car up and i can hear a whining noise around the 3 pulleys for the altenater belt , best description i can give is it very high pitched and rises and falls with the revs , any suggestions please its really starting to bug me, anyone had the same ?
-
mine whistles like a charger at low revs but then that is because i cannot be bothered to change the pas belt. does yours have pas?
-
no pas , thats what mine sounds like , had a pressure washer under the hood when i washed it , and it was afterwards i noticed , never noticed it before because of the noisy thrust bearing and the carbs
-
Alternator bearings?
-
nope doesnt sound like that region its screwing my head , nearly took my arm off on the altenater trying to locate the noise when i stuck my head in the engine bay , its either from the bottom of the cambelt or possibily what looks like the crank pulley , just seeing if anyone had this from past experience really :undecided:

My 16v sounded like a G60 for a while a new water pump pulley, new belt and tightening it up sorted it!
:)

Could be overtight, loose or worn belts. It could also be the water pump or alternator bearings, or possibly the timing belt tensioner :)
First step is to remove the alternator belt and run the engine briefly to see if the noise goes, and same with the PAS belt if you have PAS. If neither of these things fix it, then replace the timing belt tensioner ASAP, dead cheap from http://www.vwspares.co.uk
If the noise does go then replace both belts, and if that still dont fix it then replace the waterpump, then the alternator. If it STILL doesn't fix it then I'm out of ideas

my 8v used to wine also at the bottom pulley
when i reved the noise went with it
I never sorted it though as head went not long

i had something similar, it was my bottom cam belt cover, the black plastic one touching the crank pully ever so slightley

mine whines all the time the alternator bearings are gone. Spray some WD40 into alternator if noise goes away then you know its that.
