if u go into the VW related section there is a thread title "MY NEW CAR" by a chap called Rhyso, he picks his newly purchased GT TDI 130 up on Friday, that will give u an idea of what sort of spec etc u can get for the money.
But aswell as Alan says ask in the Mark 4 section as i am sure there are people that would only be too happy to convert u from a Sh!tron to a proper car
EDIT: I didnt see Rhyso reply before i posted, just in time fella!

haha Neaty - beat you to it
definately go for the GT TDI - the best you can afford.
They come with all the toys of the petrol GTI's so you get leccy windows all round, air con (maybe even climate control depending if the owner kicked the option box) traction control (you can turn that off ) front sport seats, remote central locking etc etc
Mine comes with Air Con
Upgraded alloy wheels - 16s instead of the boring 15s
Single CD player
Its perhaps a bit meanly specced compared to some but the rest of the car is MINT!! and the 16s really set it off. I paid £8200 for mine which is about right.ÂÂÂ
The power is superb - got 228lbs ft torque - together with the 6 speed box it makes for swift progress. Just how swift I'll now for definate come Friday evening
I'd shop around as much as possible as prices tend to vary quite a bit :undecided:
