Title: I'm new and got a few questions...
Post by: SilverGTI on 31 January 2006, 01:36
I'm new to the forum and i've got a few of questions about Mk2 Golf GTI's, will start with these:

1. I get mixed reviews from different people concerning what GTI I should have got and was wondering what the major differences and advantages/disadvantages of owning either an 8v or a 16v are.  I've just bought an oak green '89 16v which I do love even though it has a few niggles, but at the price I paid didn't expect a perfect machine..  The year of my car leads me to the next question..

2. What's the difference between pre'90 and post '90 GTI's? Is it just the power steering function and addition of big bumpers or are there a lot of other things to consider if i'm say for example, buying a scrapped mk2 GTI to cannibalise?

Hope to get some good info on here, will have a few more questions soon..

Arrow.  nice choice of car, cannot go far wrong with that actually.

Basically the P/S was an option, the difference between pre90 and 90 is that the trim was different, things like as you have said big bumpers and i think that the pre 90s came with rainbow trim seats, although i am more than likely wrong.

My Valve is 90 spec and has the rainbow trim seats

i think by the time it came to 1990 all GTI's had power steering as standard, valvers did anyway, not sure about 8 valves. I have a brochure at home that i got off ebay, that has all the spec and stuff, will dig it out!

Welcome to the forum.

I say if you like what you've bought and you're happy with it, forget what anyone else says. 16v oakies are quality, good choice.

Thanks for the wam welcome..

Another little question for ya, i'm thinking of purchasing some G60 arches, will they fit straight on to my small bumper car or will i need big bumper side-skirts, or even the big bumpers themselves?  I would prefer to keep the smaller bumpers as I prefer the more agressive look of the car with them on.

A lad on here (Haribo) did something similar, put ordinar GTI Arches and sills on his Driver (small Bumper) so it can be done and is fairly straight forward.

G60 arches are just the same but widers so will fit the same! and look  in my opinion!

Sweet, that's what I was hoping, and I do think it'll look fat as *#@* with only the flared arches added, but i've got a good deal on a whole big bumper kit so the choice to upgrade that will be there too if I choose..

try both, u can always take them off again when u fancy a change!

i am a fan of big bumpers but do like small bumpers on certain cars, for example another lad on here (veedubgti16v) i think has a Atlas grey valver with small bumpers, low with some nice rims, looks sweet!

So it doesnt matter what u choose, its still going to look the bizzle! In Oak Green aswell! nice!
