Title: Damp rear passanger footwell

I have recently bought a mk 2 gti the body is in mint condition but I have noticed that there is a damp patch in the rear footwell, it is really quite wet, I have put down paper to dry it out which has worked but its still a little damp.
Any suggestions welcome.

is it a 3 or 5 door?  If its a 5 door take the door card off and repair the plastic membrane behind it, in fact do all 4 as they are all lily to be knackered. Even if its a 3 door its still a good idea to check them.  Look in your local builders merchants for some cheap plastic sheeting, the stuff i used was for putting down when you're painting, nice think plastic sheet.  I stuck it down with proper waterproof duck tape and have had no problems since.

Tip:  Stick an extra length to the bottom half of the door and tuck it in at the bottom :)

If that doesent work then you will need to find the leak, get somebody to pour a hose all over your car while you sit inside and investigate.

if it is a five door, it could be your weather strip. mine has rusted under the rubber and opened up causing a major leak. :wink:

I had the same problem on my 3 door. Rubjonny's tip about tucking a half sheet in at the bottom is sound. If you don't do this then the water runs down the inside of the inner door skin and creeps down between the door card and frame thus soaking your carpets. The tucked in half sheet deflects the water to the bottom of the door and out via the drain holes.

You would be surprised at how much water a fckd door membrane can cause you to ship.

Also a good idea to check the run off channels under your bonnet. Look under where the grill is at the top of the bonnet and follow the channel there to either side of your car. I had loads of gunk pile up where the water is meant to drain out. It would end up collecting in the rear footwell depending on what way the car is leaning when parked.
