i jus bought my first golf mk2 gti a few weeks back and i know from the start i put the wrong oil in which could account for the ticking but now its turned itno a slight rattle with a major tickin noise, any ideas guys and is it safe to drive without the engine seizing??

Would that be the tappets or maybe a bomb?

Hmm, the best way to check if it's a bomb is to look under the bonnet. You're looking for any sort of clock (analog or digital, although digital is favourite now) that will be counting down to 0. This is when the bomb explodes. It will also have about 3 wires coming off, usually red, black and one other, maybe green. You must decide which one to cut to disarm it. It's customary to to sweat a lot while doing this and tell your wife you love her. When you've made your mind up, go to cut it, then suddenly change your mind and cut the one next to it. This will ALWAYS be the right one. Don't ask me why, it just is.
Or it could just be your tappets, does it get any better when it's started to warm up?

drop the oil and replace it with synta silver with a genuine oil filter bought from VW or http://www.gsfcarparts.com
see where that gets you :)

HAHAHA! Good call Brads MK2 GTI !!
Tappets tappets tappets! Quite usual for a Mk2, if it rattles a bit until warm thats generally ok. Mine started doing at odd times though so i started flushing the engine when i changed the oil and it seemed to sort it for the moment.
If they do it constantly even after flushing you are needing a new set. Not too pricey i don't think £150 at a garage maybe?
Should be fine to drive but keep a good check on your oil level and check the dipstick holder thing for signs of damage in case its reading wrongly. The tappets could also rattle more if your oil is low.
And when you say 'wrong oil' what do you mean by wrong......?

P.S dont drive it if they are really loud and rattly. Change your oil and filter sooner rather than later.

Don't get oil from gsf coz that will get you nowhere literally
I still think its a bomb

I'd go for Mobil 1 fully synth. I know people on here say use the synta that's recommended by VW, but that's cause they're all tight! Only kidding, both Synta & Mobil 1 are v. good.
I've just thought of one other bomb check (just seen it on C.S.I) people seem to be sticking bombs UNDER cars, you'll need to use a long stock with your mums make up mirror on the end. Poke it around under the car, you'll be able to see all the underneath, thus revealing any bombs. Don't forget you're looking for a clock type thingy.
The above mirror on stick trick works if you think you've got roadkill stuck under your car somewhere as well.

Why not? They sell Quantum Synta Silver for less than VW ;)
