Anyone had a good installation done in a Mk1 golf?

I have got a decent install in mine -
Kenwood mask head unit
10 speakers - 4 pioneers upfront, 2 kenwood 6x4 in the rear cards, 2 17cm kenwoods in the parcel shelf. 2 x 8inch double bass tube, in the boot.
10disc multichanger in the boot
2 amps for parcel shelf and bass tubes (parcel shelf amp is remotely wired for hood down driving)
About 600watts at the moment.
After christmas I am putting another 500 watt amp in and replacing the woofers with 2 Kenwood subs.
Should be about 1000 watts then.
It does sound nice with the roof down, and makes your ears bleed when its up!!! ;)

Hmmm, what do you take me for? It reads "love to love the ladies who love", it'll probably change soon though, but winding '6 up does sound like fun :D

Hey Adam,

Wouldnt mind a bit of advice from you seeing as though you've completed ICE'd out your cab and im just strting to do mine.

I'm replacing ther front door card stock speakers with a set of Infinity 6x4's, now are the rear door card speaker sizes a standard 6x4 also???

Secondly Im gonna be running a single bass tube from an amp and was initially going to put some 6x9's on the shef but a0- I was worried about air displacement damaging the 6x9's then also when the roof is down it completely covers the rear shelf and would cover the sopeakers.

Can you tell me how you've got round this with your set up?

Cheers mate

You'll be suprised how much you can get in a cab boot, it took me a while but i've built a box for 4 x 10". i haven't put all my system in the golf so the box could sound sh#t maybe one day it will get the system installed,

I'll email a picture to Adam if you could post it for me ?

Matt,

The only speakers that are covered with the roof down, are the ones on the rear shelf. To overcome this, I installed a cut-out switch that isolates the amp to the parcel shelf speakers, when the roof is down. The other 8 speakers are more than capable on their own. I have tried running the rear P-Shelf speakers with the roof down, and to be honest , it seemed fine.

Nice one Adam, you kinda put my mind at reast mate.

I know I might sound a bit nieve but this is the first tinme ove restored a golf before so am after as much advice as poss. So how does this sound like for a set up, please let me know of you would do anything diff:

Alpine 4ox4watt head unit running:
120watt JBL 4x6's in front door cards
120watt JBL (or infinity) 4x6's in rear door cards

Goodmans 400watt 2 channel amp running:
160watt Sony 6x9's in P/shelf
350watt 6.5" base tube in boot.

Let me know what you think and what you would possibly do different. Thanks for your help mate

Matt

I have been a keen Kewnood fan for about 12 years, and run Kenwood systems in my Cab and my Corrado, so I am probably the wrong person to ask about JBL, Alpine, or Goodman setups. But with what you have there, personally I wouldn't run speakers of that wattage from a head unit. They will be underdriven and sound tinnie. I would use the amp to run the JBL speakers instead. Then a seperate amp for the bass tube, and leave the parcel shelf speakers out until you can buy an amp to run them. I wouldnt have bothered with the rear onesin mine, had there not been a set in there previously.

Thanks Adam, your feedback is much appreciated.

So basically what your saying is use my 2 channel 400watt amp to power the 2 sets of 120watt JBL 6x4's, then get a 2nd amp to run the base tube?!??!?!

Is it viable then to get a 4-channel amp to run the 160watt 6x9's and the 350 base tub? If so what power would you recommend for the 2nd amp, 800watt????

I would use the 2 channel on the base tube and buy a 4 channel for the front and rear speakers. You will have Fader control over the speakers then. You can turn down the gain on the amp (if it really is pushing out 400 watt - I very much doubt claiims like that from a lot of manufacturers) so as not to blow the base tube. For a rough idea of how much power you want the amp to be, just multiply the peak power of the speaker by 2/3. i.e. 4 120 watt speakers = 480 watt total , then choose a 4 channel amp at around 320 watt. I've always found this a good rule of thumb.

Thanks Adam.

Just bought myself a Kenwood KAC 694S 4 channel 320 watt amp to power the 2 serts of JBL speakers and gonna run my goodmans 400watt amp to my sub. Stilo would like the 6x9's running but hey, what else can I do????

Let you know how it all sounds once i get it all instaled. Any other advice you can give me is appreciated.

Matt
