Title: Engine Coolant warning light
Post by: JonnoGti on 26 January 2006, 11:52
Excuse my igronance. My warning light for engine coolant has been coming on every now and then. Mostly when I first start up and its a cold morning. Me and My dad checked what we thought was it and it seems to be sufficient but we arent the most mechanincally orientated people. Whats this all about guys? thanks

happens to me this time of year too, nothing to worry about. i find that dropping a bit extra in the reservoir so that its a bit over the 'max' line helps. something to do with iced condensation in the switch i believe.

If this happens more frequently (even when its no so cold) then its your coolant expansion bottle I had the same problem with mine, just replace that coz the sensor is built in ...its about £8 +VAT from VAG and very simple to replace, you may as well add fresh G12 coolant while you are doing this

Hope this helps

Ive noticed it only happens when its really cold! It never happens when the car warms up but when it warns the driver its got STOP in big red letters then says check engine coolant then service manual..........

remove your expansion bottle and shove a pressure washer in it... this normally removes the lime/sh!te so the float can work properly and then youll be fine... common winter prob... but a clean float is a working float... dosnt hurt to get the coolant flushed  once or twice every year... dosnt cost alot but keeps the system clean!!

Just found this post using the search and it's a BIG releif.

I've just bought my first Mk4 GTi 1.8T and this happened the last couple of days and really worried me as there was plenty of coolant in it.

I'm now gonna give it a good clean out tomorrow and that fixes it!!

if you can get to the float and clean it , most of the time it will cure things!!
