they are dual filament bulbs mate, just cos one works, doesn't mean the other does. Down halfords, get two 472 Super Brilliance bulbs ( 2 for 1 ) should be about £12.99

see what colour the blocks are connectiing to the bulbs, mine has a black block and a white block, the white block is meant for when it is only single lights, and no spots, so keeps the dipped beam on when main beam is activated. Black one cancels the dipped when main is activated. Might just have a different block on each bulb.

might be worth checking a different loom mate, see if you can nab one from a mk2 as they had both blocks wired onto the loom. Could just be the block that is causing the problem.

Its probably either the switch on the steering column to put the full beams on (most likely) or the main light switch on the dash.  :nerd:

I've had this problem a few times over the years and its always come back to one of these, you can take the steering column one off and give the copper terminals a good clean and check them for damage but if its the main switch you'll need a replacement - they're not too much, about £15-£20  :smug:

Have you got a bulb/circuit/voltage tester?

heres a highly technical drawing of the terminal, check your getting power from all the terminals, i cant remember which way round they are but the two +'s are for the main & dipped beams with the other being a common ground - all you can really do now is start there and work back til you find it and hope you dont end up at the fusebox, car electrics are a real pain in the rr's
