A standard 150 no, but a 180 would be very close. Don't forget your tank is over 200 kg's heavier than a Mk4, & has about 190 bhp, IIRC? - Power-to-weight ratio, my friend.

My Golf was a 150, now £475 later it's 202 bhp..... I laugh at 325 drivers as I go past. :smug:

i'm going to look at a 150 hp, so it'll be close.  anyway, not here for a performance discussion between my bmw, and the Golf, was really after any proper/serious suggestions on what to look at on a mk4 Gti, thanks.

Fair enough. Common things are plastic clips on the window regulators break, window might just go clunk & stay down one day. Ask if they've ever been replaced. The new kits have the modified metal clips.

Rubber inside the re-circulation valve splits, leaving a rather loud 'chatterey' sound when you lift off the gas to change gear etc.

Water leaks through the rear headlights and/or rear wash-wipe pipe comes off. Check rear footwells & the bottom of the side comparments in the boot for water.

- Petrol cap motor seizes. Won't lock shut if it has.

I'll come back if I think of anything else.

yes i do love my bmw, and bmws in general, but im also a vw fan, i used to have a mk2 gti, and still have an air cooled bus!  just its time to replace the 3 series, and its going to be replaced by either a mk4 gti, or a newer 3 series (e46), cant decide at the mo, taking a gti out for a test drive this aft'n.

Well said ... after owning a Ford Cougar V6 for the last 3 years i changed to the 1.8T Mk4 (150) a little over 2 weeks ago now ... the Cougar would have eaten the Golf for breaky ... but thats not the issue .... i personally wouldnt change back now , i love the Golf ... its a lot more practical and more important more MPG !

Besides if you want performance you can always go into an aftermarket chip/re-map etc...

you wont be sorry ...

If you can, try & find a 180 to test drive. They are loads better than the 150 (AGU engine). Besides the extra ponies, they have VVT, a better turbo (KO3s) & a 'drive-by-wire' throttle instead of the traditional cable.

ps I really think you'll find the 150 sluggish. But, if performance isn't the main thing your looking at, then good luck with the search.

Extra ponies yes , but the 150 bhp(AUM) has VVT, a KO3s and drive by wire and when they are remapped there is no difference in BHP then
