can someone please help me identify what the problem with my freg golf gti. basically as i drive down the road there is a bad knocking sound coming from the left wheel, yesterday i lowered it using some springs and shocks that i took of a friends old golf.... I'm not sure if the problem has been caused by me lowering the car or what... any ideas as I'm struggling for thought now!!!!
-
when im excellerating it dont seem to do it but when im costing along it does!!!
-
im no expert but could be A arm bushes?
-
check the spring is seated properly, I had a knoicking sound and it turned out to be a chunk of rusty spring sat in the suspension cup!
Edit: Though it sounds to me you have something loose there!
-
i had a knocking aswell on my valver, it was the spring not being seated properly
-
check the shock top nut on the top mount.
-
the top nut is well tight but the shock still moves. could it be the rubber that seats below

If you didn't replace with new then it could bewll be the top mounts, get some G60 ones from http://www.vwspares.co.uk

fitted the suspension alm now with the new to mount but the knocking is still there... basicaly it makes a knocking noise when your going in a strait line, it doesnt constantly do it si it isnt itimitant. it also doesnt knock when your excellerating any help please.... any ideas people

when you fit the top mounts did you compress the spring fully and tighten the first nut rite down holdin the top of the shocker. it always knocks when i do them cause i use a rattle gun and not tighen them with spanners. it sound like the to me.
-
definately did them as tight as i could and now there is no movement in the shock at all. rearly bugging me now... spent all night since getting home from work messing with it and i just cant sus it........... im now looking over the many pages on this forum hoping that i might find someone how had the same problem and diagnosed it

i had a similar thing engine mount on gearbox side, when i lowered the car i had to jack it right up and must have killed whatever was left of the mount
-
Check your wishbone and arb bushes too.
Nothing really to do with the new springs but might be worth checking....drive the car in both directions on full lock, if you get worse knocking and cracking it could be the drive shaft cv joints.
-
check ur exhaust hanger and exhaust is not knocking...
-
if youve recently changed your wishbones and not put the metal insert in like i did once  then that will be what it is if not then not sure

I recentely had a knocking on my mk2 - same sort of thing, only knocked when i was cruising or slowing down, but not when accelerating. Was told it was engine mounts, CV joints, springs or bushes - so replaced them all one by one, and it didn't cure it. Also replaced the brakes, and it was still there. Only when the gearbox packed in did i get it sorted. Apparently it was a set of bearings, something like 'pinion bearings', which sounded like a big tie-wrap attached to your wheel, as it was affected by speed. This may help, and then again it may not, but seeing as it took me ages to sort it out, i just thought i'd share it with someone
ps
you don't want your gearbox to go..............really

hmm i hope not, bu6t yet if it is the diff then i will just have to rebuild it........... any1 got any idea of prices on pinion bearings and a full gear set for the diff
