Title: noticing a lack of four doors
Post by: FBF on 23 January 2006, 00:26
any reason for this other than the coupes (can i really call them coupes?) are more desirable?  does anyone have a vin decoder? any production numbers? why cant you drive a GTi slowly?  they always want to go go GO.....  why did they change the name of dime bars?  so many questions

Only reason i got a 4 door was because all the 2 doors i looked in my price range were rough as a badgers arse......

As above i bought a 5 door because it was in good condition, near me and at a fair price.

4 doors are rarer as most enthusiasts prefer 3 doors as they look a bit nicer. Although sometimes finding a nice 3 door is hard, and finding a nice 4 door can be equally hard as they tend to be treated a bit rough as the 3 doors are "the ones" to have.

Can't drive a gti slowley because they are revvy engines, for instance the valvers don't come on cam till about 2.5k, 2.75k revs. and peak power outputs on them are at about 6.5k. So naturally we all want to feel that, kinda like a drug.

ahh so there is a reason why it wants to go fast all the time.  doubt this would have any sway with the old bill though.so i assume 3 doors are worth a little more? and as you say like with all classic cars (not saying the mk2 is a classic yet) the 4 doors invariably get raped for parts and end up becoming rare yet undesirable.

pretty much spot on with the thinking there. I think the only truely desirable 4 (5door) was the LTD Editions, in thier G60 valver incarnations. (unless you have a family in which case the 4 doors are a good compromise.)

Well, I don't have a family, but the 4 door comes in as handy as hell for when I'm gigging with the band. It used to be sh!te with the 3 door driver I had, this is just a godsend, and anyways it's no slower than a 3 door!

4 doors make the shell stiffer so there is a plus to having them

it's true. it's the door apertures that do it.

I prefer the look of 3 doors on any car, although wouldnt turn down an Alfa 156 or new Civic -  sacrilege.
TBH, I originally got the golf as a stopgap for a 156, but from the fun i have when its going, theres gonna be some fun stuff done to my 8v...
