Title: Smoking - riings or stems??
Post by: MackyM on 22 January 2006, 22:13
Car smokes when left idling for more than a few minutes. Never on start up, never when using the power, just idling. Was thiking it must be stems but is this just wishful thinking?

Thanks mate. I wouldn't even attempt it - I fix PCs not cars :) There's a place here that does it for £70 apparantly. Sound about right? Don't suppose there'd be any saving in getting the cambelt done at the same time?

If you're getting the head taken off to do them then deffo new timing belt and tensioner. Last set I did was without removing the head as the leak down tests were good.

Thanks to both. Like the look of your alloys, silkyballs (boy it feels uncomfortable referring to another male by that name  )

No probs geezers   I also have 5 doors and twin lamp grill - even if I only have the BBS alloys (which I love actually). Maybe we can start a 5 door, twin grill thread for the more discerning dubber

Yeah, we'd have the 3 door guys up in arms! There's nowt wrong with the BBS, they're beuts! Mine's in the garage at the moment, one of the stud holes has been bent out of shape when the front disc exploded! Not sure if it's fixable but I don't really have the cash for that and a refurb. And I can never make my mind up about the BBS or the wheels that're on. If only I had to GTI's....

Its likley to be the valve guides mate, if you do the stemies it will fix it for a bit, but it'll come back.  How many miles has it done?

Ha, exactly what my valver had done when i had em done.     Had mine done at tsr so cost a fortune.  I may be wrong but its somthing you should consider,  just having the stemies done could be false econmy.
