hi, ive got no reverse on my mk2 8v gti.
followed the guide putting it all back together, but i cant get reverse unless i manualy select it from the bearbox itself.
1.2.3.4.5 r all fine just reverse, please help im at my wits end.

needs realignment think rubjonny wrote a quick while back.
basically lift the car up at the front and follow the gear selector rod to the coupling on the end and loosen it have someone sitting in the car holding the stick central.
central is about 1nch from the left side of the lower box part. if you have some wd40 etc... spray the coupling and get the other person to wiggle the stick about before putting it into the central position and tighten. if you done it right all the gears will be in the right place. might take 2-3 goes to get it right

so the gearstick still needs to be more to the right than it is???

yup, easiest way to do it without the alignment tool is to loosen the pinch bolt, select 3rd and move the gearstick to the right slightly. Then recheck the alignment :)

cheers rubjonny, ill shall have another bash tuesday.
why 3rd gear out of intrest, take it , its the most central gear so to speak.

just cos you'll almost always be able to select it realy :)
