Title: 2.0 8v conversion - which cam to use?
Post by: Mew on 19 January 2006, 18:35
Hi, what cam would you recommend to use on a 2.0 8v with the digifant head?

I am looking for something that can still be driven under say 4k and have a fair bit of go to it still. Does that make sense?

I've seen a piper 280 degree cam, would this be any good?

i have a piper 285 which can be a pain in the ass sometimes at low revs/sitting in traffic etc, a 276 (i think) might be better....

Sorry to be thick...but why is the 285 a pain in the ass?
Lumpy idle? mis-fire?
Regards
Alan

I think 280 or over will start to become a problem for day to day driving, and will be more geared up to track day use. I can't see it being much fun when all the power band is in the high rev range, it drinks petrol, and idles well high and lumpy. Come to think of it, sounds like a 16v!! He he only joking you valvers out there! :)

not mis firing but yeah a lumpy idle and needs a good blip of the throttle sometimes when pulling away in traffic, makes you sound like a boy racer revving the hell out of it for no reason!! i used it everyday for about a year until i got a company car and looking abck on it i don't know how i put up with it sometimes, it makes you want to just cain it everywhere! but i don't regret the choice....

I run schrick 276 in my 8v wouldn't recommend it if driving around town, Very lumpy idle, high hydracarbons stinks of fuel when ticking over, But overall awesome cam. From 3000rpm pulls like sh!t of shovel. I use my car mostly on motorway so willl get useage of power band. Go for kent gs2h or schrick/newman 268 or 272. Cant go wrong with any of them. Used TSR split cam before nice cam, Go on www.tsr-performance.com and check specs.

Hello again
Ihave had my digi for about 9 months. In that time it has been a pain in the ass to get running properly. I  have changed usual things including blue temp sender plugs etc ...even the ecu.  It does not stall  anymore but idles really badly but goes like sh!t off a hot shovel. It also has a smell of petrol at idle. Is it possible that is has a lairy cam? It has a 2litre block and revs happily  to limiter..What do you think?

Hmmm, i'm probably thinking of a slightly more tame cam then by the sound of what you guys have! How about a g60 cam, would i see any benefit from this?

If you want tamer cam go for 268 or gs1h cam. Dont run G60 cam, g60 req different lift to gti as forced induction. Pesonally kent gs2h cam would be perfect with 2lt engine. Not lumpy and excellent gain poss upto 12-15bhp.
