I have an 1991 8V GTi. Today I locked the central locking from inside by pressing down the door knob. When I eventually went to get out by pulling the door release handle it didn't unlock the door. Eventually had to wind down the window and unlock the door with the key! I guess this ain't right, right?

just unlock and lock your car a few times and it will be sorted.Remember to pull the inside door pins up fully.

Thanks, will try in morning, your suggesting that the mechanism is temporarily seized? The car has been standing for a while.
-
if that dont work then you might need to take your door cards off and check if the central locking hose has come off or seized. ;)
-
Lock the car and see how long the pump in the boot runs for, if its longer than about 5 seconds then it may be on the way out and not creating enough pressure to open the doors.

The central locking seems to work fine, its just the inside door pull which doesn't seem to trigger the CL when you pull it? Also the pop up door plunger next to the window is too low to pull up when the doors are locked, is this right?

Sounds as if the connector on the handles come adrift, time to take the door card off and have a look.

Thanks for the info, I'll have a go, is it easy? Should the interior passenger door handle open the central locking too?
