What a week. First the wifes car breaks down and I have to listen to her moan and complain about it until I fix it. Then I go out to my Golf to go to work and It won't start. Ran fine yesterday when I parked it. But today just refused to do anything but crank over on the starter. After 15 minutes and holding the throttle to the floor I finally convinced it to start. Runs excellent, no problems once it started. Drove to work and left it sit while there and the same thing. I am thinking warm up regulator (i think that is what it's called) has crapped out on it. This could also explain why it seems to be over fueling lately. Am I on the right path here anyone. It is an 89 16v. Thanks in advance

my '87 8v had a similar problem. It'd start fine when warm, even sometimes when it was cold, but after I'd left it parked at work for 8 hours it'd turn over loads before firing up. I cleaned out the intake and I think that helped a bit aswell as changing the air filter.

Have a look at the cold start valve(5th injector) and the thermotime switch. This briefly enriches the mixture when starting.

Or your distributor maybe on its way out....
now its getting cold you need a decent spark to start the engine. It'll run fine once its started but it might a be a combination of wear from this year and the weather finally dampens the spark sufficiently to stop it starting.

My Mk II was a nightmare to start in the cold - highly intollerant of either cold or damp conditions - As T/M suggests it may be the dizzie - although as always with these things it's a bit of a process of elimination excercise:
Distributor / leads / plugs blah blah blah ..........

If there is a problem with the dizzie, then its likely to be the hall sender.

Golfvr6, is the cold start valve sort of below and forward of the dizzie on the same side of the block with a fuel line running to the metering block on top of the air box and from there to the fifth injector? I think I may be thinking the same part but calling it a different name. I am thinking that is the problem as I have to hold it to the floor to make it start cold and it smells of petrol very strong after starting. I'll have a go with that first and then start on the rest. I have it booked in for service next week anyway but I hate having anything wrong with my car if you know what I mean. :) I'll let everyone know how it works out.

The cold start valve is on the end of the inlet manifold, gearbox end. Have you checked for a spark ?

Ahh ok. I checked that out after I got it running. I pulled the connecter off it and the car quit. I guess that means it's working? not sure, i was guessing if it didn't do anything by disconnecting it then it was probably bad. :) Spark is fine. runs like a dream after starting. Cheers for the help and I'll let you know if anything further comes up

ah, this is the common misconception. the spark maybe okay once the car is running, but the spark can still be weak. thats the gotcha.

Now that you mention it that makes sense. you need a stronger spark to light off than sustain i suppose.
