Hi,
I've just got hold of an early type radiator so i can get rid of my expansion tank. This will help to clean up the engine bay but does anyone know if this will affect the efficiency of the cooling system? The engine will hopefully be prodcuing about 180 bhp but i don't want it to cook! Has anyone done this mod??
Cheers,
Ben

That sounds like a rad off a lesser model (non-gti) so you'll be reducing the fluid capacity which is going to result in higher temeratures - i wouldn't bother myself
-
If you want to go down that route you will have to get one made for your car or modify a jap radiator to fit.
-
i thought it was to good to be true! I'll look into getting something made!
cheers for the replys

The early 1600 mk1 gti had that rad in it, should be ok for 180hp when you look at the size of modern rads in jap cars.
Steve.

 surley it had an expansion tank too though? :undecided:

The expansion tank was built into the side of the radiator, if you look at this picture of a mk1 with a 1.3 engine, you will see the radiator cap on the side of the rad. (picture stolen off another post )

cheers for the replys everyone, getting there slowly now! Not enough hours in the day

So what engine are you using for 180bhp
-
well the idea is 1.8 8v fitted with a 2.0L Audi crank and bored out. Gti engineering big valve head fitted with a shrick cam.
Fully lightend and balanced bottom end with APR nuts and bolts. Hopefully going to fit a webcon alpha silver twin carb package but just trying to figure out how to setup the ecu (crank sensor, lambda sensor etc etc). Ive got all the bits apart from the alpha kit. Hope its all gonna work!!???

I had a rad like that a few months ago... they hold the same amount of water as 82-92 Mk1 golfs/cabs - as I was looking at putting it in my old skool cab... but then changed my mind... when I found the rad was broken... on the look out for another one myself....
Do what I do - try it out and if the car starts to over heat.... top using and find another solution...

The best way of doing this - is to put front of the car on stands and put the car in gear and run it like that for 30 minutes - with no air coming from the front... it will heat up lovely and the fan should kick in and keep it to normal temp - if not well u know?!!!!

 what about getting an expansion tank to fit in the scuttle tray ( :angry:i need a light bulb on head smiley!!!) that would heat up the air going into the blower's motor and mean the car would get all nice and warm inside much quicker - not so good in summer though

Thats not a bad idea!!! It's not gonna happen for a while though. Ive had the car in a bodyshop for just over a year, but he's done basically nothing.
Ive been really patient as the guy has a good reputation but I've had enough now! Taking some where else on sat to get a quote so fingers crossed!
