Hy!
I wonder if anyone can help, I have a MK2 golf gti 8v 1992 K reg, which has done about 140,000 miles.
The problem is that when I look at the oil level it always reads lower than half way on the dipstick. I keep on toping it up and within two weeks the oil disapears to the bottom of the dipstick again.
The car runs good, good power, been serviced,no smoke comes out of the exaust, no oil leaks underneath the car nothing. The only thing is that next to the ht leads there seems to be a bit of oil.
Can anyone tell me wher my oil is going??
Any help would be really good
thanks.

Probably worn valve stem oil seals, if you are only losing a bit of oil its nothing to worry about. VW quoted using 1 litre of oil per 1000 miles to be acceptable. How much oil are you using per 1000 miles?

this is to cover themselves - so they invent this bullsh*t.
my last car (fiat bravo) rarely burnt any oil, the nissan from s2n did 3k miles without burning a drop. but my mates c5 (piece of turd) was guzzling a frightening amount of oil - they just pointed him to the manual as their disclaimer....

Does it matter how many miles you do or does the oil just go down the same amount every two weeks? If it's the leaking through valve seals or past piston rings then doing a lot of miles would push up the consumption.

oil shouldnt really go any where. the engine is a sealed unit at the end of the day.
if its going somewhere, its either leaking or being burnt. it doesn't evaporate. If its leaking - theres a hole and a patch under the car - if its being burnt - then something in the engine is worn.

Hang on a minute...........
Can you get K reg MK2 golfs anyone?
-
K is possible, i've seen a couple - it'd be a later reg'd 1992 model.
What oil do you use? Fully Synthetic (eg mobil 1) isn't really recomended in older vehicles.

check to see if theres any oil under sump.

Every engine will drink some oil, the idea that an engine is a completely sealed unit isn't strictly true. For example the valve stem oil seals will commonly leak a bit of oil when cold, as the engine warms up the rubber seals expand hence seal better. How much oil an engine uses does depend on the individual unit itself.

point taken, what i was trying to say is that a good engine doesn't guzzle its way through oil.

Yep i agree with you Tin. Its all a question of how much and how often. I also agree that Vws stated 1 litre per 1000 miles is a bit iffy.
-
1 litre per 1000 miles, didn't the GTi was 2-stroke ;)

It all depends on the service history of the car as well, If its been lovingly looked after its less likely to go burning oil. As said all engines will burn oil, its unavoidable, but the case here sounds excessive.
Get someone to follow you up the road and see when the smoke is coming out of the exhaust, you wont notice it half the time as your looking at the road ahead I hope and not constantly in your rear view mirror.
With that much oil being lost it must be going somewhere.

Mines a oilaholic too but not that bad. Check under the sump if there is a build up of oil. Maybe the oil you are using is too thin?

thanks guys
