Hi there, I have jsut passed my automatic licence and am looking to purchase an S,T or V reg 1.6 auto golf (either S or SE). I know this is a GTI forum but could someone tell me wheter these are good reliable cars ? or should i look at getting a Polo 1.4 auto instead ??
I am spending around £5000 and the car will have mileage of around 40,000 ish
any advice would be greatly appreciated

Of course all Volkswagens are good reliable cars!
Get as new a car as posssible with your budget.
The Golf is more roomy, but if you after economy go for the Polo.

Why did you just do your auto licence?? Y not the full one

dodgy left leg unfortunately
You mention buy as new a car as possible, so does that mean there are significant differences between say the S and X reg's ??? Also, another question, does the 1.6 auto have enough pull (i know the mk4 is a heavy car), has anyone driven one before ??
what about mileage, fo £5000 should i be looking at under 40,000 , how long will they go on for ??

I doubt many on here will have had much experience of Autos but you could try putting a thread in the mk4 section as not everyone goes in all the sections. Might be an idea to do a search in the mk4 section for buying advice too as a lot of the advice will be on mk4s in general not just GTIs. As Len says, the Golf will be roomier but a similar engined Polo will probably be nippier. I dont know about the changes to the mk4 model for each years so again might be an idea to ask this in the mk4 section. As for the mileage, 40,000 for a VW is nothing, they really do keep on going so dont be put off by high miles if the car in question has good history and looks well cared for.

or get a fat loan out and get a DSG GTI!!
on a serious note tho, try looking on volkswagen.co.uk and look at used cars, see how much they go for, but remember they'll always be slightly dearer on a dealers forecourt then if its a private sale.
I havnt driven a 1.6 to be honest driven a 2.0 non gti and it seemed to do the trick, didnt set the world alight but even the 2.0 gti's arent that quick. Go down to a dealership and ask for a test drive on one!

if you go to the bottom of the page and click on technical data you'll get ana idea of the performance differences.
