Title: Oversize wheels causing Mk2 probs - Please help!!!
Post by: Golf GIT on 13 January 2006, 12:30
Hi everyone.

I've got a MK2 Golf GTI 8v. The guy I bought it from put some deep dish alloys on it. I didn't know of any problems until I had 4 people in the car for the first time the other night (an urgent trip to the nearest kebab house) and with the extra weight the back tyres were rubbing on the wheels arches like crazy. A reasonable suggestion would be to stop giving my fat b*st*rd mates lifts to the bab house but I've now noticed its doing it when I go over hills and dips at speed so I need to do something.

the tyres seem to be rubbing on the actual arch itself (wide bit that sticks out the side, not the bit over the wheel, sorry if I haven't got my terms right...) so basically the problem is the larger width than wheel diameter.

This problem is causing my rear tyres to shred which obviously is not too great!

The wheels look great on the car so I don't really want to replace them with standard size ones. I'm guessing this is something many people have experienced so what I want to know is, are there any easy solutions? Is there something I can do to the (newly replaced) shocks? Or will I have to have larger arches put on?

I'm worried this is gonna cost a bomb to put right, can anyone suggest something cheap and easy?

Thanks very much in advance for your wisedom,
MarkTwo

Whilst asking your friends to lose weight would be one option, the more realistic is to get your car to a good bodyshop who will be able to 'roll the arches' for you - basically fold up the metal return edge on the metal work and trim some of the plastic arch back :)

Also you might want to replace your plastic arch trim with 'G60' arches if this hasn't been done already, especially if the edge of the tyre sticks out beyound the arch, as this would be an MOT fail I believe.

Id agree with the above, get the arches rolled and find yourself some g60 arches to go on there. They are just that bit wider than the standard ones and look so  ! Especially if u have deep alloys on there!

it's better to roll the metal away rather than cut it. cutting leaves a very sharp edge which isn't what you want.

Thanks everyone, I'll check out my local body shops. BTW has anyone got a rough idea of how much rolling the arches should cost?
