Title: Best Mk II Door/dash speaker/tweeter combo?
Post by: reserves on 11 November 2003, 17:13
Hi

I have a 1991 Mk II Golf with standard door speakers and tweeters in the dash.

I want to upgrade these speakers to better quality ones.

Does anyone recommend any sets? I know Mac Audio used to do one when I had my first Mk II.

Where can I buy them and for how much?

I am running a high power head unit but no Amp.

Cheers

R

Thanks, however I want ones that fit in the standard place, I don't want to cut into my door panel.

u said door speakers. afaik the only ones that go in the doors are like mine. u only have to cut the door car slightly with those speakers cos the magnets are so big. ;D

Also try out Pheonix Gold 5inch ?99 ones, thats what I just put in...but you HAVE to cut a small hole in the door panel, because the pannels arent formed comepletly flat dude.

Also take a look at the Pioneer TS-A131C (160W).. They are a combo with 13cm door speakers and separate tweekers.

I mounted the 13cm's in the door pockets (fitted perfectly) and then removed the original dashboard speakers, broke out the speaker and unsed the actual speaker ring as a template to make some small mdf templates to drop the tweeters into.

They went in treat and with the dashboard covers back on they are very discrete in the eyes of prying audio thieving toe- rags ;)

Paul.

Try Phoenix Gold Tantrum 5.5's, power them with a decent amp and they are excellent. they fit in the door pockets perfectly too, tweeters can be flush mount in the dash position, you will have to fabricate a bracket tho (easy!) they have a separate crossover for each side and are about ?180 but you could prob get them cheaper online.

They should be ok with the head unit and it still gives you scope for upgrade later. they are expensive tho  :(

Ive just fitted the pioneer custom fit speakers in the dash and the emotion range in the door - Great sound - reasonable price and a happy me - and all fits in original places and no one knows what you got behind standard speaker grills!

Oops lost track of this post!

Thanks for all your replies.

I wanted to spend about ?70 and I was hoping for direct replacements, i'm now not sure if my car has tweeters in the dash as standard (the car is at my dads, i'm picking it up tonight :))

ducatimad, were the pioneers tweeters or normal full range speakers?

The phoenix gold sound amazing but a bit pricey for me!

Hammy, will check out the pioneers, thanks.

Cheers!

Rich

Will a 50W sony head unit be able to produce the power to get reasonable bass response from say a good set of componets or will I have to get an amp?

I got kenwoods in the doors and having just put a MDF shelf in the back with amp and 6X9's the sound is all coming from the rear with hardly any up front.

Do yo have the Sony unit already or your thinking of buying one?

I would go for a good range Pionner unit because you have more control over the sound.

I have a Sony XRCA500 50x4W.

As the bass is coming from the back i would buy some matching watt components to suit the headunit.
Then fade the sound more towards the back.

Doing this will bring out the bass in the 6x9s and will also give you vocals up front without the vibrations.

Works for me ;)

either that or get some good front componentsa and amp them and then just run the 6' by 9's off the headunit. if the amp is 4 channel then bridge 2 channels for a sub, then do the above. it will sound a bit more balanced. depends if you have audio critical mates in the back often  ;)

I'm not going to be running amps and I really don't want a replacement shelf to run 6x9's.

I have a good head unit and really want to get a good sound, doesn't have to be that loud, just clear.

Does anyone know if the original speakers in the dash (of a 1991 8v) are tweeters? I also have the original speakers in the door.

If I buy a set of components will I have to run new wires from the headunit to the tweeters and bass speakers (to include some type of crossover I assume)?

Also I want to buy direct replacements for the back (6" x 4"s right?) anyone got any suggestions?

R

Yes the dash speakers are tweeters.

You dont have to update the speaker wire but I would reccomend it if you are after quality sound. ;)

Dunno about other MK2's but my dash tweeters are quite clear so I left them alone ???
