iv just got a mk2 golf but the sound is crap. i have an alpine head unit and want to know what other stuff i need to get decent sound system (speakers, amps, etc) but dont know where to start. i dont wana go over the top, can somebody help.

Best setup:
17cm components, mount the tweeters under dash
10" sub
6x9s are a bit redundant, you need to box them to get the best out of them if a sub is in the boot, and the mids and tweeters on the 6x9s mess up the sound stage

Cheers mate.
what about an amp??
Spud

If you want to go all out, as good an RMS monoblock for the sub and as good an RMS 2 channel (or even bridged four channel) Amp for your components, but you can get away with a bridged two channel for the sub and the normal headunit outputs and it sounds good enough..
Just make sure you go for a good manufacturer for it.
You made a good start with alpine hu tho

just an extra note, spend a bit more on decent wiring, oxygen free cables and make sure they can handle the power of your amp/s, speakers etc. it can make the difference between average sounds and a quality setup.
