i have a mk3 gti, still got the standard 15 inch alloys, anybody got any advice how big i can go, or have any experience of larger wheels?
-
I had 17" on my last golf, and they looked great, but remember when you come to buying new tyres, then ent cheap for a good set of 17's. I'm looking at alloys at the mo, and I'm going for 15" this time, only because I think the car will sit to high on 17's, but i might lower it yet. and being lowered on 15's it should sit qiute nice, that euro look as they say in the vdub crowd!
Is yours lowered?
-
not yet im just starting to play with car now, im starting with 57i induction kit, fse power boost valve and power chip, this should all be done by end of week (as long as it all arrives) alloys is my next challange just not sure what i can get away with, cheers for sdvice

mines lowered 40mil on 17s and the wheels fit nicely under the arches. Also with not havin lowered it stupid amounts the ride isnt too bad.
-
mines dropped 60mm on 17's, you shud be fine with them as long as you dont go over a 7 'n' 1/2in wide rim.........
-
thanks people, 17 is what i was after, lowering will have to be the missin after at that!
-
Watch the width!!!
I have 17x8's with 215x40 tyres and there is a slight fouling problem on the rear.
So go for 7 or 7.5 wide wheels with 205 wide tyres. Should be no problem then.
-
I've got 7.5x16's and I get some scrubbing on the rear (lowered 60mm), only very minor though, just needs a simple arch adjustment.
I'd go for 17's, unless you lower it a lot 16's can still look lost in the arches!
-
Im runnin 8.5x17s slammed on coilovers an mine dont rub.
-
this is what 17's look like on a gti that isn't lowered.......
(my old 8v)

this is how my old car looked when it was lowered 70mm
on coilovers with 17in audi wheels 7.5 wide with no arch mods
but you must make sure et is right or you will be in trouble

Yes - but what tyre widths??????
-
tyres on mine are 215x40x17
-
Saqme size as mine then!
Maybe the et is wrong on mine. They rub not on the arch but the rear bumper when there is a load in the back!
Perhaps I need some new springs!
-
so if i was looking at alloys 17 inch and 7 wide, what size tyres would i need
-
205 x 40's
-
cheers
-
mines on 8x17 ,205 40 17 , coilovers and i think the et was 35
minor scrapeage on hard corners but that means its just low enough,
-
looking at some alloys and the tyres are 205 40 17 on the front and 205 45 17 on the rear, should they be like this?
-
probably not. Ideally u want the same size on both as the ones on the back will be 5mm deeper.
-
17,s on mine / 205x40x17only and lowered 40 mm , only scrapes when five up , plus twin sub box and on going fast over sh!tty roads
-
deafanatly going for 17's, fox 1's 205 40 17's but looking at lowering, cheapest way seams to just be a set of springs and i can lower by 40, whats the down side of just springs instead of full kit?
-
done it put 17's on car it it makes such an improvement, looks class!!! got mb italia thor 17inch, low profiles and it feels good, cheers for advice evryone
