Title: Door latches
Post by: richandhazel on 09 January 2006, 12:35
Just got my new mk4 home and I've already got a problem

Drivers door won't shut. Was working fine when I picked the car up but just got it home and it won't have it. Any ideas what's happened?

use the key fob to lock and unlock the car a few times. My Passat ones are sticky sometimes.

Seatbelt caught in the bottom of the doorframe..... I've done that before!

Tried that. I can get it to work sometimes and have tried lubricating it too. Now taking the door panel off to see if I can get it out and clean/lubricate it.

There is a known fault on the Passat B5 with sound deadening material in the door jamming the lock. Maybe the same for the Mk4? they share a lot of the same fittings.

"the fix is to remove 3 screws that hold the door trim on, then remove or stick back the sound insulation inside the door to the outer door skin, making sure that none is jammed in the lock mechanism. In 95% of cases the door lock will now lock and un lock on demand. Total cost 15 minutes time."

No such luck. Have finally got the latch mechanism out and it looks like it is fooked  Not a good start to mk4 ownership

Looks expensive too :undecided:

One of the window clips is broken too so it looks like I'm doing Gaz's metal clip mod whilst I'm in there.

New latch mechanism ordered from VW. Includes all the central locking mechanism etc: £78 + Vat. Not too bad considering it looks an expensive bit of kit.

Window reg kit ordered too.

oh dear rich, not a good start at all ! although they are known for dying.. the first signs are things like doors unlocking themselves when using the button on the drivers door, or the alarm not arming with one press of the fob.

mines in today having cambelt/tensioner/idler, waterpump, and new aircon pump.. i think my mk4 needs it's own credit card

No, not a good start. My mate at GSF told me that he has heard that a few of these are starting to fail. Still, my insurance cover note hasn't arrived yet so I can't tax/drive it yet anyway. New door latch and metal window kit comes tomorrow so should be up and running soon. If thats all that goes wrong then I'll be happy

Can then concentrate on clearing out the garden, starting with the mk2
