Title: replacing rear pads

hello all,

Replaced front brake pads for the first time on my pride and joy (89 8v) a quick job that ended up taking 3hrs.... I'm planning to do the rears tomorrow, is there much difference? Does anyone have any hints and tips to save some time and/or the skin on my knuckles?

your will need a tool to wind the pistons back in on the rear callipers...should be able to get one from any half decent motor shop  :smiley:

I managed the front with a piece of wood and an oversized srewdriver, perhaps not the recommended method but it got the piston back into the housing.

the rear callipers work different to the fronts...because of the handbrake they wind in and out...and quite often become stuck in position aswell so be prepared to possibly lose some more skin!!  :tongue:  :laugh:

Thanks for the pointers Daz. So does the tool rotate the piston back into the caliper housing? How much do these tools cost, would be willing to trade cash for skin.

The tool winds the piston while pushing it back in at the same time. I got mine from Halfords

halfords no longer stock them due to low sales, found one at some obscure garage on the local industrial estate. Thanks for the advice.

job done, though after seeing the state of the rear discs i'm sure it won't be long till i upgrade 'em  :smiley: :smiley:

How much did the tool cost. Any I've seen have been quite pricey!
