Title: question :)
Post by: pinkcrush on 05 January 2006, 22:41
forget my other posts, but

why would a car, go from running ok, to pulling over, stopping, but not turning the engine off, to pulling away with no power ?

it was fine, but then nothing, foot on the floor but only doing 10mph and struggling to do that, it didn't cut out but was close to it.

but i stopped, left car for about 30Min's and it was back to high revs but with power

any thoughs, cos iam getting close to taking her off the road :(

its a driver ain't it? (from pics) mine was the same.. make sure its not firing on two when starting, cos mine was,

have to rev mine until it revs clear as its lumpy at first, and i get that no power thing, even tho foot is to floor,

my lil bro sorted my carb, and just make sure you give it time to warm up, and give it some good revs until it stops been lumpy... (if that makes sense!)

i'll mail ya if needs be! xx

As i have mentioned the not cutting out sounds like the auto choke not doing its job, the no power and then power is a bit iffy. Can't say i have ever had the problem. Might possibly have something to do with the accelleration cable being stretched or possibly breaking in the casing...  :undecided: :undecided:

but yeah it is a driver, but ive sorta had that one, well still do, but it was warm when it did it this time, thats why i might take it off the road, soooooooo many problems :(

but thanks again

ann

slick..the cable was checked :( but no hint of any probs

as for the auto choke this all goes back to the poxy carb being changed

Have you try-ed replacing your ignition leads mate i had a 1.3 that would lose power for no reason and it turned out to be the leads being fooooked and if your still running a piersburg carb burn the thing Ive had old bms and golfs with piersburgs and they are nothing but trouble get a weber put on and you can have a manual choke that comes in the kit loads less trouble......

you can have my weber for a fair price if you want, its not running properly as its dirty inside and needs a proper taking apart and cleaning out, i aint doing it cause im not at all good at that sort of thing, it should be absalutely fine once thats done, i cant see any reason why not anyway, they seem simple enuf devices???

Do you mean you have a automatic car or do you mean you have automatic choke......

Could be down to carb icing, or perhaps an issue with the carb.  Was the coolant channel o'ring in the inlet manifold replaced when the carb was swapped?  If not then that may be why both the old & new ones arn't working properly ;)

Do you live anywhere near Bracknell?

Shame I could have had a look ;)

Your o'ring probably looks like this:
http://www.hallvw.clara.co.uk/jettachoke.htm

Which will give you all kinds of trouble with the autochoke, and also make it more prone to carb icing as it wont get as hot!

wow

Symptoms: Starts willingly enough, but once warm the idle stays around 1400rpm, but goes back down after standing idling for about 10 minutes or more. Runs on when turned off.
In cold weather, choke comes on again, engine smells of fuel and runs badly around 2000 rpm. Choke completely cured by bridging choke heater thermo-switch contacts, but idle still high.

its my prob's, ok not about the power, but if i get 1 prob down :) :) :)

many many thanks rubjonny :)

i would love a golf person to look at my car :) beacuse you all know what ya looking for :) but i think you are too far away :(, but hey your all trying to help so thats a start :)

the dreaded o`ring again.... mine had transformed from an o`ring to a plug

Post by: rubjonny on 06 January 2006, 12:46
Yep defo the o'ring, I had exactly the same problem on my old driver till I swapped it, after that the throttle blips to 1.5k for a couple of seconds then drops to 900 and stay there no matter what :)
Its night & day difference :)

Oh and did you get round to reading my 2e2 FAQ?
http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=18871.0

It gives a bit more detail on whats involved to change it, its not particularly difficult but getting to the bolts can be a nightmare!  I'm sure there are a few Knights in shining Golfs who live near Essex

Post by: pinkcrush on 06 January 2006, 12:58
yeah it deffo looks like its the cause of the problem :)

and yeah i have looked, looks quiet scary :)

i dunno if my bro will able to do it, but looks like it needs to be done

ok so where do i get a new o'ring from ?

and again many thanks :)

You could ring up your local VW dealer, while you're there you'll also need an inlet manifold gasket.

O'ring - 035 121 171 C - £2.70+VAT
Gasket - 035 121 171 C - £5.32+VAT

It really isn't hard if you can get the right tool to reach into the gap, a thin wobble extention & hex bit is essential! :)

Post by: Haribo! on 06 January 2006, 14:14
hey if i can do it anyone can, just make sure that all you bits are conected firmly or they might fall and sit between your manifolds which happened to me, got very pissed off, a long thin magnet might come in handy

Post by: rubjonny on 06 January 2006, 14:44
Yeah I lost 2 bits that way, luckily I had loads of spares.  I taped the 4th one together so it didn't happen again
