Ive just done a rear axle on the wifes astra. To me the setup looked very similar to that of the golf. Apart from the usual faf on with brake lines and handbrake cables on drums it was very straight forward. As easy as it looks really. Good luck!
-
easiest way to take off the axle is the 3 bolts that bolt the axle plate to the bottom of the car. 17mm (if its badly rusty smack a 16mm on there)
Drop the bottom of the struts of 17mm bolt.
Disconnect the brake cables from the handbrake (in the car) cut the brake pipes (off the scrap car)
This will allow you to do all the hard work where it can easily be accessed.
Trust me this is the easiest way. i have done 3 rear disk conversions this week.
hope this helps.

If you want a windscreen, take a shaprp knife and cut the seal, its the only way to be sure you'll get it out in 1 piece :)

Sorry m8 i'm up in yorkshire. Lol
It doesnt matter if it is disks or drums . . just the same.
I dont think it matters if you get if from a different model. just any mk2 beam axle if it is a mk2.

I believe that there is a difference between the Gti models and others .
The Gti ( and possibly the 1.8 carb) has a stiffener rod welded in to the 'V' section of the cross beam (as to how much difference it makes to the handling is another question :undecided: )
It also may make a difference if your car has a brake pressure regulator fitted as I have a feeling that mk2 golfs/jettas without them don't have the required bracket ( where the spring is bolted) welded to the beam ( If yours has one then you'll need one with but if yours doesn't it will not matter as you can ignore it)
Hope this helps and not confuses the issue, Oli

Only GTIs got the ARB in the rear beam, the 1.8 carb models did get a front ARB though.
If you get a GTI one you'll need GTI handbrake cables, and also faff with the brake pipes if yours didn't have a pressure regulator originally.

Hello there, Im southampton based, and basically doing the same thing as you, however just got the rear axel and just need it fitting along with my windscreen! you sure we dont own the same car!! :P Well if you get it fitted before me, let me know how easy it was. Cheers buddy

aint you better off getting a windscreen from insurance? 50 quid max??
The only down side is that they fit a bigger windscreen seal that looks crap
-
Hi mate, if you havent already left look out for a silver mk2 gti, will probably be in and around some breakers in the Pompey area today!!
-
Mk2 Ozz were are you then ???
all done now    when the wheel nuts were undone it looks like the hub nut was loosened it was jacking the car up so i could get it all ready for when i got back and i see that the cover and split pin was missing and finger tight so now it is nice and tight and out for a test drive    and it all good any apart from the windscreen

yeah man, just to see vanessa if nothing else!!
they used to have loads of amazing stuff in there but they seem to just get crap nowadays....
-
I too use Silverlakes, they had quite a few 16valvers in recently

Was at Silverlakes yesterday, and the car I've been working on recently is my old golf that I'm sellling to a mate, its over in Emsworth atm so have been popping in to Harris' quite a lot. I live out in Swanmore right near Silverlakes tho, so usually just go there. I know what you mean Joe, Harriss hasnt turned out much for ages, only go there for piddly little bits now as theyve hardly ever got a good selection. Yesterday Silverlakes wasnt that great either, only had three golfs there, but I did meet a couple of guys there, one with a corrado and the other a golf, and had a good long chat with them!!
