Title: Uh oh!
Post by: steviem on 04 January 2006, 23:33
OK, if anyone has looked at this: No low beam or wipers (http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=31921.0) you will be pleased to know that things have become worse.
I found my car wouldn't start this morning, popped the bonnet and found that although the earth wire is connected firmly on the gearbox casing, it wasn't screwed down next to the battery so I screwed it down, but it still wouldn't starty
A neighbour saw the probs I had and jump started it for me, it idled at about950 rpm, but the mfa showed this:

Then what looked like smoke came out the centre vents, but cleared in seconds and there was no improvement on my lights/wipers situation - why does Golfy want to hurt me!?

The MFA will go nuts if it looses popwer, pull the fuse/disconnect the battery negative for 30 seconds.  Take all the battery/alternator wires and clean em up with a wire brush.

Ta, why does all this have to happen in the winter?! Summer would have been ok, but thats just my luck, I guess...

If you saw smoke coming out of the dash and have lost lights etc you may have had part of the ignition power burn out. This happened to me last year. Have a look in my project section for a fulll write up of what happened.

It might not cost you that. Take your bottom tray off and have a look. If its not something you can do yourself then take it to your local auto electrician and get a quote.

Well, can't see any burnt out wires, so either no wires were affected, or I've gotta pull my dash to bits
Gonna go and get another ignition system relay (or whatever they are called) as soon as I can get a lift to Euro Car Parts, the battery seems flat again, and theres no one to jump start me at the mo....

If I was to do a dash swap with one of the newer (not brand new) polos, would all of the electrics inside the car basically be made brand new?

Because I love the look of my car, just hate the look of the dash and the way the heater didn't work to begin with...
Title: Re: Uh oh! *Its fixed!

Well I had to get it to an auto electrician in the end, who is a friend of my grandad.
I haven't been told the actual problem yet, but its fixed.
And all for the princely sum of £35! How lucky am i?
