Both my local VW dealers tell me that cars will be in short supply throughout 2006 -limited to a handful. One dealer quoted only getting one per month during 2005.
I also notice that Motor Depot http://www.motordepot.co.uk/search_results.asp?manufacturer=VOLKSWAGEN&model=Golf have loads for sale.
I haven't contacted Motor depot yet to see if the cars actually exist/delivery dates etc, they are loads cheaper too. (I'll give them a ring tomorrow). There seems to be an anomaly here? Please enlighten me.

Main dealers talk rubbish. When I ordered mine, my local dealer told me that there was high demand, a long wait and insisted that I would not be able to get discount on a UK dealer supplied car, so I walked out of the dealership. Soon after I ordered a UK car to my spec with around 8% discount and a reasonable wait. Don't believe what your dealer says and shop around is my advice.
Other supermarkets that currently have GTI's include www.motorprovider.co.uk (http://www.motorprovider.co.uk) and www.motorpoint.co.uk (http://www.motorpoint.co.uk)
It's worth noting that the cars from the supermarkets will most likely be imports and as such will probably only have a 2yr warranty.

I agree with Melchior, a salesman in a main dealership is always going to tell you the car you want is in really short supply because he can use this as the reason he can't offer you a discount - "we can sell everyone we get, so we don't need to discount".
As far as I'm aware car supermarkets like Motorprovider & Motorpoint only supply imports & it's important to check these are paralle/pan european imports (EU member countries) & not grey imports. Otherwise you could be looking at different specs, components (which might be hard to replace), anti-corrosion protection, poor UK dealer back up, increased insurance costs & lower residuals when you come to sell. As Supermarket cars are generally sold from stock (rather than to order) there is a possibility that it's been sitting around for sometime since it was PDIed by it's supplying dealer and you will have lost this part of the 2 year warranty - you can buy a 3rd years warranty for around £250. Also make sure the price quoted is the on the road (OTR) price as I have heard that they sometimes charge extra for registration, plates & tax.
If you're looking to order a car to you own exact specification, I can personally recommend Euro Imports (http://www.euroimports.co.uk/), who source their cars direct from dealers in Denmark - depending on spec these take from as little as 5 weeks to come through. Not only do they provide a first class personal service, but their cars represent a very good saving on UK list prices. For example, the typical price of a GTI 3dr, manual, in red with interlagos interior & cruise control is £17,995 OTR - no hidden extra costs whatsoever.

 :smiley:Beleave me I did ALL the homework.... finally decided after doing 500 miles here there and no where visited motor provider www.motorprovider.co.uk at there showroom at sheffield. I looked at a few cars they had on display that put my mind at rest that the car I was bying was identical to the one I had looked at VW dealer but £3500 cheaper. They showed me a list of different cars ie colours and specs and I went for a car with a few options.. 7 days later I was in my car driving it.... I would have waited for a dsg car but went for manual as i didnt want to wait 3 weeks.... proper people no complaints at motorprovider....
